What Color is Your Carpet? {pics please}

Minh,
I have only had this carpet for a month. It is about 4" across.

I have to admit that I bought this as a bit of an experiment because it was the right price and it looked healthy (other than being a little bleached).

It is one of two 20 gal tanks on the same system that each have 2 65watt PCs over the them. Both these tanks have been very good at growing and saving BTAs, H. crispa and haddoni anemones.

I've been wanting to test the thought that giganteas must have very intense light for a long time and I felt this was my chance.

It took him a couple weeks to find a spot where he would attach his foot. I wanted him to be in the rocks to be as close to the light as possible. There is a powerhead that shoots about 3" above him for 15 seconds every ~30 seconds, that gives alot of motion. I feed cut up silversides about 5 days a week.

At this point, it has reestablished some of its zooxanthellie(sp?) and has become quite shaggy. I don't know if the shaggy is a good thing or not, but it has grown a little and seems happy. This pic was taken today. The above pic was a month ago.

Shaggy is good :) Looks great Phil. Good luck.

BTW I can't remember if I mentioned to you, but in regards to your experiment re. lighting -- I have my green gigantea under 175's. Tank is also fairly tall (24"), lights are 12" above the surface and the carpet is of course at the bottom. .. So although MH, not technically THAT intense of lighting. Been doing fine since April. Been growing nice. The only thing is the green has darkened a bit, which I suspect would brighten up some under brighter or bluer light.

It looks great. One month without shinking is verygood. I think it will be just fine. Lots of the problem seem to be shipping related, and then tank condition. Once it doing well in your tank, it will continue to do well unless there is problem.
Good luck,
Minh

MathU,
Could we get a closer pic. Is that a haddoni carpet or gigantea? Looks nice!

Appears to be a Haddoni, Imho.

hi, im not sure of the name, i bought it with a setup..someone on here can probly iD it..here are a few more pics this thing is over 24"wide. i feed it frozen shrimp once a week.

I was thinking Mertensi as well. The way it conforms to the rocks around it is what tips me off. I have never seen a Mertensi in person but that is my guess.

Here's a shot of my 2 haddoni. . .I've had them for just over a year. The green one is about a foot across and the blue is about 6":

The multiple colors are awesome! If it was a merten's that big, I would expect to see longer tentacles near the middle, but that doesn't mean its not one.

MathU, does your anemone have spots on the underside?
Merten's carpets almost always have red/orange or purple spots on their undersides like this pic. Haddoni carpets almost never have spots. Gigantea's sometimes have spots, but they are usually bluish.

yea, it does have orange/pinkish dots underneath...like in the pic.

Well then, congratulations. You probably have a Merten's carpet anemone (S. mertensii). They are not often imported, and you have the prettiest one I think I have ever seen.

The bad news is, they can get even bigger, up 3 feet across in the wild.

thanks, for helping with the ID..and would you happen to know how much i could get for it?LOl..its one of my favorite things in my tank but its the biggest pain! im gonna need a bigger tank for this baby!

The price on marine organisms depends on how much someone else wants it. :D
IME, the wholesale price has been between $15-$30 depending on the size, but they are rarely collected. You might be able to find someone who has been looking for one forever, that would spend $200 on such a nice anemone. On the other hand, because of its size, you might have trouble giving it away for free.

If you are looking to get rid of it, you might consider donating it to a public aquarium, if there is one in your area. They might give you a year's free pass in return.:celeb1:
