What do you expect for ARS?

This word vision has been tossed around a lot on here. I feel like I am at a faculty meet, but nevermind that.

What is your vision? What do you want for and from this club?

I will start this show. I would like to see meetings periodically, 3-4 a year, with frag trades, etc, and maybe a tutorial here and there from people willing to share experience. These need not be formal. I don't want much more. I have been involved in all kinds of clubs and I can tell you, in my experience, when all is said in done, MUCH more is said than done.

At this time in the ball game I pretty much agree with you Kung. I think baby steps are certainly what needs to be taken at this point. Jumping off the 20 meter platform is not something I wanna see taken at this point in the game. Lets get some get togethers under our belt, get to know one another, then we can leave the kiddie pool and get in the big pool by the ladder.

I do agree, everyone needs to be acquainted first, but 3-4 times a year is not enough for me. I mean I visit this site everyday, as I know most of you do. I say a meeting once a month would be good for me. The first couple months we can keep it laid back, and just get to know eachother, then late on in the year we can become more formal with meetings and agenda. Speakers, and presentations. I would really hate to ahve to join a club in Ohio or Kentucky just to be able to learn in more about this hobby. Our region doesn't really have a club that is an actual club of devoted hobbyists, and think it's time for ARS to get the ball rolling.

I am sorry, but I am not willing to committ to once a month. It just won't happen. I just do not have the time, especially since nobody will really say what they want to do. I have no interest in another organization that levies dues and tells me what to do, when, and where to be.

I'm a bit confused.
I'm all for stating slow but are you all sure you don't have ARS confused with the other club?
Why do you want two clubs for?

Well, It'd be nice to have meetings once a month and swaps 3 or 4 times a year. I don't think this area can handle 3 or 4 additional frag swaps.

I truely saw some what should've/were great tutorials at the last club, but I think the atmosphere or location or something was so bad that I really couldn't get into it.

You all here will some day be considered club founders (regardless of what others may say). When you look back, wouldn't you like to achieve something?

I'm going to carry on a little more about the other club.
I truely believe that they are saving reefs and they have some fine peolple in that club.
That's all I've got to say about that.

Then why not join it? Seriously, I don't mean to be a jerk, but they have what you want. A vision, a goal, an oppressive regime :lmao: okay so maybe the last part isn't ideal. I have nothing against them, but I just don't have time or energy for anything like that and I don't think it's fair to act like I do and then not contribute. That's not fair to anyone. If you want what they have, why should we re-invent the wheel? Join 'em if you like what they are doing. I don't especially want that, so I don't. If we start another club like them, I won't be real active in that either. That's all. Do what you want, but I thought I might point out an easier solution than getting all of us on board in something that we don't really believe in.

Nope. I am NOT new here. I just don't want to meet the new boss only to discover he's the same as the old boss. I guess I just don't feel like I have a mandate to accomplish anything here, and I am not sold anyone else's ambitions as of yet, so I prefer to keep it simple. For now. Maybe sometime down the road we can do that hospital tank, or the Ronald McDonald House. Great. We should have just started meeting and hanging out a year ago, but we can't turn back time. I don't want to rush something that isn't really necessary. Good things come to those who wait, patience is a virtue, fools rush in where angels fear to tread, etc. I would rather do it right, slowly, and screw it up going to quickly. Think of the club like the reef.

NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS QUICKLY.

That was the first and best reefing advice I ever got. I take it to heart.

It doesn't sound like you'd be real active whether you believed in it or not. In fact, what do you believe in or want? Why do you have to come to a small reef forum in another state to chat? Why dont you just go to the main forums? It's not like we've met or you know us. Not to be jerk or anything.

Nothing that I've said states that everyone has to be active in any idea that the club proceeds with. No club has 100 percent participation.

Who is "all of us on board"?

The difference between the old boss and the new boss (I hope) is that you can vote his butt out if he's not achieving what the majority wants out of their club.

I would if I saw the need to be involved or felt like there was something to accomplish.

I believe I answered that with the first post of this thread.

That is a reasonable question. Google Gallipolis, OH, and it answers itself, though. I am MUCH closer to Charleston, Huntington -this area, than I am to Columbus or any other local forum. I may be out of state, but only by a matter of a few feet (really), so this is as local as it gets for me. I do want to meet people and all that.

Who is "all of us on board"?

I really couldn't explain that, so I might as well just take it back.

If you guys failed previously at this, then you guys may be most important to our success.
I'm sorry but I felt like I was getting jumped on for trying.

No, I wasn't trying to do that. I just don't want to make promises or give impressions that I don't intend to make good on, and I think slow is good, especially in reefing.

Seriously, God bless you for ambition, I just have been burned, so I want to do this right.

Happy reefing.

What do I expect:

  1. First, I hope members get along with each other. I hope each one appreciates the other. Everyone can learn from the other, not just about reef, but maybe about some other skills/hobbies another member is into.
  2. I admire those who are passionate about the hobby. I research a lot and ask a lot about this hobby, and I learn a lot. I am grateful that I get the help whenever I ask for it here at RC, ARS, or CVRC. I try to pay it forward. If you need help with programming your Neptune AquaController or Apex, or have questions in Vodka dosing, let me know. I'm always ready to help. I hope everyone does the same.
  3. I expect members to be as open as possible. If someone is looking for a certain fish or coral, no one should hesitate replying that they've seen it at a LFS or online. If someone is asking what the best way to raise alkalinity, mention Arm & Hammer baking soda or direct him/her to Bulk Reef Supply.
  4. I hope there will be group buys. I would also try my best to help organize group buys when I can.
  5. Meetings. Quarterly or twice a year.
  6. Frag swaps. Quarterly or twice a year.
  7. Weekly Chat - weekly online chat
  8. Trips. Once a year (e.g. MACNA, shop tour, tank tour, etc.)
  9. Group tank project - that would be great.
  10. Sponsors - I hope the group get sponsors so there would be enough funds to make some of the projects possible
  11. Website - a small website for identity purposes. The forum can be redirected here at RC.
  12. Finally, I hope there will come a time that there will be officers that would help keep the group tact, interested, and make sure some of the goals above happen

If ever, I have no intention to run as an officer due to my workload in my day job but I will help as much as I can when I have time.

You're new here, aren't you?
Well maybe the other was not my last post tonight but Jake isn't new here

Nope. I am NOT new here. I just don't want to meet the new boss only to discover he's the same as the old boss.
Same as the old boss I won't get fooled again.

Again I think once we all meet face to face It'll be clear it's not the same as the old boss.

Oh man i guess preview post is our friend. I hate to say it but your reply to Kung is out of line

He's probably closer to Charleston than we are coming from another state and he's been a member for years. How do you know we've never met?
You have to either see that our base is from several states since we are located in a "Tri-State area" or form a club that's only based in Charleston

That's what we should focus on making sure that doesn't happen again. Lets try to be less defensive here

This is one of the issues that have been resolved in our club. We are now governed by board members without a president. So I think this point has been nullified.

resolved? That's a stretch.
You just quit calling him president. He still has more vote power than any other board member doesn't he?
All the board members combined can't vote him out can they?

I say we meet, eat, and then decide who wants to take this club to the next level, vote them in, and others who do not want to feel as though they have a full commitment can be members, and come to meetings etc. whenever they want. Really no need to debate it until we all meet right? We can get a lot more accomplished in person than with 500 thousand posts on here about the subject. (plus everyone from jo mar's pet club can spy on us here) Lol

All governing members have an equal vote and there is no longer a president of the community. In order to become a governing member all one has to do is contribute to the group and move up. If you would like you could review the policies on our board.

I guess I am considered a spy. Funny how I was here long before you. Btw, maybe I would like to be a member in both clubs. I am sure I can benefit your club by bringing enough members to create a quorum to create the new clubs by-laws.
