what exactly are "trace elements"

Seems like this term gets thrown around a lot when talking about healthy/growth of corals, but what exactly are trace elements? And what exactly do they do?

I think my system is to the point where it would benefit from the addition of elements/minerals, but I'm hesitant add anything until I know what exactly I'm adding and what it's going to do.

All the elements in the universe less the small handful we actually test for; at this point in reef keeping, regular water changes should be enough.
