What is the standard garuantee on a fish purchase?

None of the fish stores here in San Antonio give a refund or offer a stay alive guarantee. If you have a question on a fish watch them feed it, make sure it looks healthy. And definitely QT.

OK thanks for the info, I had them feed the pair before purchase, the male (who died) was not as enthusiastic about eating but they told me he had just eaten....

IF they give a refund or even think about it, they will ask you most likely what is your parameters, how long did you accilmate and how did you dot it, most likely will need the fish back and also a water sample. Thats what my LFS does. Personlly i would call wouldnt hurt.

Tommy, thanks for the reply, I did give them a call, provided water sample, fish body, and followed strict quarantine. he offered me a free male onyx replacement fish, but I had to fight for it.

Let me say to all who are reading this thread that I have never in 30 years asked for any credit for a fish. I have always taken full responsibility for my livestock choices. This is different for a number of reasons and the fact that I was not comfortable (in hind sight) with the way the sale of the pair took place. It was strange how this pair, and other pairs from this "Breeder customer" were housed. The pair of black Onyx Clowns I purchased for $150 was supposedly a prized pair of breeders from a woman claiming to work at Rods Foods.... Great price I thought, If it were true and they were healthy, right? So why are they crammed in a small community tank... is this how the owner treats a pair of prized breeding clowns, possibly from the past clutches of Mamma Onyx herself (may she RIP)! Ahhh screw it I thought and let me get these two out of hear and into my empty 55 gal clownfish breeding suite...the rest is history. He offered me a free onyx after a fight, but I will never go back due to his indifference around the entire matter. Note I have refrained from mentioning the store's name and don't wish to, I just dont agree with his business methodologies.

Do they have their return policy posted near the register? What does it say? It sounds to me like the owner finally made it right even if you did have to jump through a few hoops. You wanted a pair of clowns right? Isn't that what you ended up with in the end?

I goto one LFS but for corals. They sell fish but only high end fish. I have given them lots of business and I pay cash and get a discount with it. He takes care of me. If I was a new customer I would not expect much. No store does not want to lose a good customer.

In times past, the fish could die in the bag on your way home, and a lot of LFS would still refuse to make it right. But I think the popularity of online buying (and their guarantees) has caused some to be a bit more flexible these days. IME, it really comes down to one thing: How well does the LFS owner know you? If he's confident you know your stuff (and you'll probably have to bring in a water sample), then a lot will do something to make it right if the fish dies within the first week. Maybe not a 100% refund... but something. P.S. If the fish never ate this strengthens your case.

^^^ I thought Petsmart didn't have a Saltwater Livestock Dept??? At least around here they don't.

I had a new yellow tang that I brought home, but after three days of eating nothing, I took him back to the store in hopes they would take him back and could save him. they were happy to take him back, and offered another fish in exchange, even though they have a no refund policy on any livestock. I thought this was pretty decent of them. (I hope they saved the poor tang)

Usually fish shops will never give a guarantee on any fish that leaves their store simply because they don't know what type of system the fish is going into so how can they guarantee it will survive in your tank!?

Thus if you buy a fish you do so at your peril as the fish may not be ideal for your system thus the process by which the fish is introduced / acclimatised into your tank is irrelevant because if your system is not ideal it will still die. So I don't think fish shops should give a guarantee / credit on a fish that has died in your tank except in the circumstance where it is brought back alive or was sold to you ill prior to purchase.

So research before you purchase a fish!!

One of the perks of having a good relationship with your LFS is that they will be more likely to give you a chance with this. I've had stores with no refund and no return policies take back animals from my tanks because they've known me well and trust my knowledge and tank.

Fish shops will not take back a dead fish or refund a dead fish was my point If its returned alive thats a different story

I can honestly say that just this weekend I had an issue with a diver's den order, and it has so far been the most pleasant experience to date on a problem with livestock. I'm honestly surprised at how hassle free the whole experience was, and if a gaurantee or a warranty or whatever you want to call it on a purchase is part of the consideration, I don't think you can do any better then live aquaria/divers den

I get all of my livestock from one place, they have a 14 day stay-alive guarantee. If your purchase dies, or even starts to look bad within that time period, they will issue a store credit upon bringing in a water sample for them to test. They also get to know you and your tank before selling you anything, best LFS I have ever come across. It is strictly saltwater, they are very knowledgeable, and they stand behind everything they sell.

Doesn't really matter what the standard is, only what the policy is of the store you bought the fish from. I don't know of any LFS here that has any kind of guarantee, which is why I also watch the fish for quite a while before buying.
