I'm looking to buy a breeding pair of Ocellaris clowns Ive ran across some true percs but would rather have the black and white. At least a sexually mature pair with the hopes they might breed someday. I have a nonmature black and white now with a reg old false perc but might have to take him back due to my size misjudgement. My female is small I baught two juvi's last year and had one go carpet surfing. THe false has been alone for 8 months or more. Would rather buy a pair instead of trying to make a pair.

Purchase two small juvis and keep no other clowns in the aquarium with them. Feed them well.
I've had CR ocellaris go from egg to breeding in 13 months.

Here is just my 2 cents...

Buying a proven breeding pair is not much different from creating a pair. If you were to take a breeding pair out of their tank and put them in a new one, it could take over a year for them to start breeding again.

If you were to buy young clowns, that could take a year or more. Either way, it could take very long. The reason I would say go with young clowns, you know how old they are and how long they will live!

sorry to jack this thread but i have had wc true percs pair for about 9 months and have been waiting for them to breed. they're probably over a year and half old. what conditions will help make them breed? i heard its the water quality and diet? am i right on this assumption? do they need a host in order to be interested in breeding?

the female is about 2 1/4 inch and the males is 3/4 of the size of the female.

i took this picture when i first bought them...they're a little bigger now.

Sorry, but this is just not correct.

The OP wants a spawning pair of black A. ocellaris and buy to immature fish, forming a pair and then getting them breeding could take upwards of 3 years or more. While transferring a spawning pair between tanks can often result in only a couple of missed cycles.

this is the original poster here under the g/f name.

I really dont care about them being true, false, black.

Does it also help for them to have their own sepperate tank? to raise them into maturity in? Looks like i might just have todo it the good old fashion way and take my black perc left and try and get a smaller one. She is still picking on him some but they swim together more and more as he is being tollerated. here is a pic for size. when i was living in texas i did have a non breeding mature pair they where doing the dances and cleaning but never spawned i had to move so i sold them to a local reefer. Now that im in nw iowa its slim picking compared to dallas so its perty much online only. thanks for the replies everyone.

yes he is misbared. im thinking of putting him in a seperate 55 gallon and growing him out to be female. But id still like to find a breeding pair of false, true, onzx(spellcheck),black clowns. Atleast some sexually mature.

If you guys can point me in a good direction thanks.

It took 3 years before my Black Onyx started laying eggs. Plan ahead on tank setup. I have carpets which fix there location, but everything has to be removable. Once they finally decide on a spawning site, it can be very difficult to get them to change. No other fish is helpful at hatching time. I have to remove a 10 lb rock covered in coral for two days at hatching time. Feed, Feed, Feed. Stable, Stable. I haven't found a quick way, just lucky between breeding pair and raising 2 into a breeding pair. IMO an anemone helps establish pair bonding. If they share they are a pair.
If you find a breeding pair, try to duplicate what made them feel comfortable before.

You have to just watch the boards and let people know you are looking. Depending on your price range, Inland Aquatics sells pairs but you will pay for them.

I myself have bought 4 proven pairs with 2 other older pairs from various people in the Michigan area. Some were great deals others were considerably more. These were all added to the broodstock system within the last 3 months and two have just started spawning. It can take much longer for them to start up.

You can make a pair easily, but if you want to spend the money upwards of 250.00 a pair...!!!!!????? You can buy them at Live aquaria right now....Divers Den......Don't spend the money make a pair....

Money is no object....But it's always better to no your animals.....Not just as machines for producing $$$$$ but as creatures you can understand....Appriciate,..respect...

I would like my hand at raising the fry one day. For me now its just what i want. some people spend over a 100 on one tang. juvi clowns in a 125 just looks small to me. I'd pay 200 for a pair no biggy cuase heck ive already spent lets see 40 for the black and white a few reg false percs. Took one of those back he fended him self long anuf to be saved. I'm going to move the one female over to my 55 and let her go on and age. Maybe try intraducing another small juvi in the tank at the same time. So all in all I think ive found a few places to watch to find what im looking for. Thanks for all whome looked at my post and took the time to help me out.

"Would rather buy a pair instead of trying to make a pair" is what was posted. Please stop trying to nix constructive suggestions.

I was just stating facts man, try not to get so defensive. He said he would RATHER have two clowns that have already paired up. I was just answering the question where you didnt really answer the question so don't try to correct me.
