Where have all the pods gone?

So Friday night, after lights out, I gave my tank a quick once over before I went to bed (as I do every night). I could tell something was up because, I could vaguely see thousands of particles in the water. I grabbed my little LED flashlight (which I always keep on hand) and looked into the tank. What did I see? Thousands of copepods. I mean, they were everywhere, and in the same concentration at every position in the water column (if that makes sense). Hundreds of them would swarm to the circle of light made by the flashlight.

This tank (a 40 breeder) has been running for about 3 years, now. Like I said before, I pretty much check it every night. I've never actually witnessed a pod swarm until that night. It was pretty neat to see. But, when I checked the next night, there was nothing. Where did all the pods go? Do they die off? Do they go back to hiding in the rock? Do they hop into their over-sized luxury cars and move to Boca? What gives?

good question, i am in my 3rd week of cycling and have a swarm of these guys. Only difference is mine wont go away lol. Do they come and go on there own or do i need a cuc?

If you have swarms at only 3 weeks you must have added a few bottles of pods. Otherwise I doubt yours are copepods...
Unless of course you took all your live rock from someones established tank who has tons of pods.

I have checked and rechecked, differently copepods. I put them under my microscope to make sure. I did purchase my live rock from my lfs. tons of growth on them. The store told me they where already cycled. I also added live sand. So im guessing the copepods came from my live rock?

Could it have been an emerald crab or something which spawned?

Not to sure, looks exactly like this

Copepods (and Mysid, Isopods) wax and wane; not always clear why. You can have swarms of them one week and none the next.

@sparky - I had a podsplosion in the first month too. My theory was that they came on some chaeto and in the early stages my tank didn't have anything to eat them yet. Idk what eats them, but I think I have it now cause they went way down on their own. Or maybe that's how they breed, something triggers a spawn but most die for lack of food, like I'll have a little temp swing and my snails will lay a lot of eggs. Anyway, you see a lot of people thinking that first boom means they have a special tank that can support a mandarin at one month, and then the population levels off, so don't get too excited.

@ wannabe - that's cool, you never know what you'll catch peeking in the tank before bed. I want a red light, I'm pretty sure my critters get up to all kinds of shenanigans after lights out.

Thanks for the info :) Im guessing its a good sign to have them at the end of a cycle. I also got tube worms and 2 little yellowish antennas sticking out of the sand, not sure what that is yet. I am going to add a snail or 2 in a week or so. I wont be adding fish or coral to soon, want to make sure the tank is well established.
