which clam can i keep?

i am researching about clams, and am doing research b4 blindly just buying things.

i have a 90 w/ 2-150 hqi, i am curious which clam will suffice, and which clam would you guys recommend? i have a shallow sand bed, w/ some parts having no sand at all. i was thinking bout getting a clam that will attach itself to a rock, but dunno if that is a good idea? or a clam that shoudl settle in the sand...

the tanks is almost near its 1 year mark, if it means anything.

i know there are the maxima, crocea, dersea, and what not..

please chime in thanks.
 
I know that t.crocea like to be on rocks. they need alot of light too. How high in the tank could you place it, or how many inches below the lights?
 
With your lighting, you should be good to go but with Tridacna maxima and crocea I would recommend keeping them in the upper part of your tank in the rock work for better lighting. As I remember a 90 gallon is 24" deep.
 
hmm.. i have a lot of spaces, i was thinking about 1/2 and up?

will these clam grow big to the point that it may be heavy and topple rocks and cause imbalance.

so right now i am looking at the maxima and crocea. thanks..
 
If you pick up a crocea then it definitly needs to be fairly high up in the rock work under one of the halide bulbs....They need the most light of all species of clams...
 
ya, because i don't have sand, and if i do get the burrowing ones, i am afriad my lights won't reach that deep.

i am afriad the rock attaching clams might get heavy and cause imbalance if i fit it in the rock work, i also read crocea doesn't grow that big in relation to the other ones..

If you have your rock stacked well...I put my first clams up high back when I had 175's , but placed them on a large flat rock, it would take an earth quake to knock them loose now....if yoy have your rock work built up and sturdy im sure it would be fine...
 
You could go the Squamosa route, one should do well on the bottom of your system.

IMHO,
I would stay away from Crocea for a first clam, I have seen too many die or do VERY poorly when tried first. Squamosa and Derasa's on the other hand have always been a more adaptable clam ( IME ), the Squamosa being a fast grower.

Well if you have to have either a maxima or crocea, then they would need to be up in the rock work to make it....To keep a full size max or crocea on a sandbed, in a 20 plus inch tank heigth...then at least 250 halides are a must....Now you could get a away with a baby max on the sand bed , mind you, that you would have to target feed it live phyto often...but as it grows and becomes more light dependent it would have to be moved up in the rock work, or you would have to bump up your light system.., say a 250 between the 2 150s would be the least expensive route to go...

But like Leviathan stated try out another clam like a deresa or squamosa first......stalbe water conditions are a must Ca, alk, ph , flow....then after the the clam does well try your hand at the other more light demanding clams...

But If I were you and the brightly colored clams were a must have, I would look at giting a single 250DE pendant and placing it between the two 150s....probally would pick up a 14k or 20k to give the tank some more blue whyle bumping up the par...or you could go either 67k or 10k and have 14 to 20k 150s...I know changing lights is a bummer I have done it three times in a little over a year from VHO to 175s to 250DE's.....but ading 250 pendant woud be the cheapist...

basically i will get 2-250 hqi later down the road.

i am just weary of having a clam that will grow big w/ time and cause probs in rock work. thus i am considering having an area in my tank where I am just going to dedicate to the clam.

i have sugar like sand, will that be okay?

i want a clam that will do good in the sand, and won't be trouble in the rock work, so i may avoid myself from getting a clam that needs rock .. are squasoma mostly yellow, type shade?

k here's an analysis.

i ultimately want clam to reside in my REALLY shallow sand bed., i feel that way i can let it grow as big and now have to worry the rock work. but given the lighting situation, what can i do for now? can i get a clam and have it attach to a 'rock' and then detach it and move it down later? or will that hurt the clam?

so what exactly should i get?
a squamosa?
a dersea?

and later maybe a crocea or max?

Personally I would try a squammy first. Get one thats at or close to 3" or a bit larger, to give you a better chance of sucess ( especially if you dont plan to suppliment feed )

Try your hand with a Squammy before you jump in and get a Crocea or Maxima. Once you feel comfortable with a Squammy, then maybe try a Derasa.
 
I have always had my Derasa & Squamosa clams on the bed. You can actually put others there also, as long as light is sufficent.

In cases like Croceas which are known to like rocks and coral heads, you can always put a small piece of LR rubble under him to let it attach too.
 
I dont mean to jump on your thread but was wondering what clam would do best in my tank. It is 36x36x24 that has been set up for 9mo(tank, rock and water set up for almost a yr) My parms are all good, lights are 2x400 MH. I dont have any sand in the tank right now, but was contiplating adding a small section of sand in the middle for a lagoon type look. What do you all think?
