merely tapped this stuff the wrong way while sliding it out and poof!!!!!!!

I was strapped for time before, this could be an all day affair.....

same thing happened to me when I was adding a handle to two sliding glass doors a year ago. Cost me about $500 to replace after everything was said and done.....stinks.

Just an irritating road block. I can get a new piece tomorrow, fairly cheap, but come on!!!!! Really!?!?!? If my mother-in-law stops by today I may punch her in the neck just to relieve the angst! Gotta stay calm around the bambina.

I don't mean to take a whiz in your cornflakes, but you're going to want to make sure you get UV blocking tempered glass to replace that.

Hopefully, one of the dimensions of that piece is greater than 12"; that way they can cut the UV glass and have it fit on the rack they use when tempering.

DO NOT run that DE bulb without the UV protection, unless you like the look of bleached corals.

Yeah scott it's about 12x24. I'm guessing the extra words means extra $$$$.

The tank has a large glass center brace. I was planning on putting the piece I didn't break over the halide that is above water, and leaving the glass off the side that is over the center brace glass. No good???

this provoked a question...is this a specific type of MH that requires UV glass? because i have MH's on all my tanks, and none are covered with UV glass and my corals are fine. I just want to clear that up....as it raised a concern.

I believe that Double ended (DE) need UV protection while Single Ended (SE) do not. I am not sure where I heard this, possibly description on marinedepot.

This is correct.

When the rabbitfish shattered the glass cover of the DE MH pendant at school, I thought I could just replace with plate glass from the hardware store.

Luckily, some folks on this forum expressed enough concern about replacing the tempered UV with plate. I then did a little research on RC. Check out the pics on post #22 from this thread:

That's about 24 hours without the glass cover.

I'd search online for an exact replacement from the manufacturer and leave that light off for now if it were me.

Sorry dude. With any luck, you'll be able to get your replacement lens in less than the three weeks it took to get mine.:mad2:

Kat years ago I had a mishap with a DE bulb so I did tons of research so here is what i know:

Double ended bulbs are made of Quartz and not glass so they need glass shield to block UV. any glass blocks 99.99% of UV there is no special UV glass. However regular glass ( not tempered) will result in heating up and cracking in contact with splash from the tank or rapid heating/cooling which tempered glass will withstand.

Single ended bulbs are encased in a glass "Bulb" which blocks UV and does not require a UV shield but may need one to protect it from cold water splash since its just glass and not tempered :)

T5, VHO, any incandescent unless specifically designed to let UV through, block UV with their own glass.

hope this helps

dont try to run that light without glass on it... it'll wipe out your tank in the matter of minutes.

P.S. thickness of the glass may change intensity.
