Who has a beautiful LPS dominated tank?

Not as nice as the others and missing 5 or so lps that are in my prop tank for a moment. No SPS

a lot of people say "go MH!" and i bought into it.

but honestly, if you are keeping an exclusively LPS tank like I am, you will not want 250w bulbs. I'm thinking of either trading the 14k hamilton bulbs for 20k XM bulbs. or selling everything and getting a T5 setup

Not with 14K hammies. Those bulbs aren't particularly powerful, so you should have anything burn. If you want to save energy, run a shorter photoperiod. I think the 14K hammies are excellent bulbs for LPS. I couldn't stand them over my acros.

Oh yeah, acros grew well with a 8hr photoperiod, same setup. I would try 4 to 5 hours.

i'm 100% sure it's the hamiltons =)

the process is VERY gradual. and it only effects the red pigments in the corals. Some of my corals are a very deep red and have definitely become pinker. it mostly effects my scolymias.

Interesting. SE or DE? I never had any issues with red and hammies. I am using 10K AB now (much more powerful), no problems with red. In fact it is more intense. Perhaps you are experiencing UV leakage.

they are SE bulbs... hmmm UV leakage? that sounds a little scary

is there a way to test for this?
i've always noticed that the particular bulb in question is more yellow than the other 2 hamilton bulbs. all of the corals that have ever bleached have been under that one....

I'd replace that bulb. Test for UV leak? You may already have.:D I'm just guessing, but it seems that you have a defective bulb.

Stick with the 250s though. The tank looks good underneath that lighting system.

I've got red zoo's and mushrooms growing great under XM 175W 10K MH and they are only about 12" from the light. They've been like that for a while and are actuall growing better than they were under just 220W of PC. Actullay all of my LPS/softies/zoo's are doing great under that much light as well as my lone clam and one SPS.

I now use the 220W of PC as atinic. 14 Hrs of 220W PC atinic and 12 Hrs of 175 W MH. I don't think it's the lights. But that's just my opnion.

Whats that white tenticle looking thing dead center in the middle of your tank up close to the surface under some type of pump or something?

That is my toadstool leather

Although not nearly as beautiful as many of your tanks and certainly not "dominated" yet, we've decided to make our 90 into an LPS tank. It's been rather aimless in direction for awhile but we've recently started working towards making it a nice LPS showpiece. We certainly have more to do, but that seems to be the nature of reefkeeping. :)
