MP40 Quiet Drive

MP40 Quiet Drive

There's a beta tester on youtube with the new model posted today! AWESOME Pump! Truly 40% (tester thinking 50) with almost no noise at 100%. I couldn't hear the difference from 1% or 100%.

Looks like this new model will retail at $349!

I'm in!!!

More info
We have uncovered more information on the upcoming VorTech QuietDrive that EcoTech Marine is scheduled to announce at the ************ ReefStock event, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of the VorTech pump.

QuietDrive is a new driver technology that they claim will make the dry side motor run smoother and up to 90% more quiet. It is hard to believe that changing the controller's way of communicating with the motor can dramatically decrease the pump noise, even for previously released MP10, MP40 and MP60 VorTech models -- but EcoTech has done it!

The controller will come in an all black case with a new mode called "Gyre," that replaces the previous "Long Pulse" mode. It will still be able to sync wirelessly to existing wireless models of VorTechs and will still be fully compatible with EcoSmart Live via ReefLink. For Neptune Apex owners however, note that QuietDrive will still be not compatible with WXM on the release date. The new MP40wQD will be "Better in Every Way" as ETM puts it. The overall look of the new MP40wQD will follow the design of the MP10 and the MP60. The newly designed dry side has been upgraded and now provides 40% more output and cables that are about half the diameter and more flexible compared to the ES. The wet side has been redesigned to use dual bearings which improves its durability. MSRP is expected to be $349, $50 less the original price of the MP40wES when it first came out, and just $50 more than its current price, that is if you can still find it in stores. It is scheduled to be available Q2 of 2015.
For MP10, MP60 owners a QuietDrive controller upgrade will be available. Current MP40wES owners will have the option to upgrade to the QuietDrive controller as well which will make the pumps more quiet but won't get the 40% increase in output. Below are diagrams of what you will gain when upgrading to QuietDrive. For current MP40wES owners, check out the allowed combinations you can do with the old and the newly released dry and wet sides:

Any sort of trade in/upgrade plan for old mp40s?

Upgrade > absolutely

Trade in > doubt it

Apparently to get most of the benefits (reduced noise) you will just need to replace the driver. This should be a very simple upgrade and hopefully inexpensive. The new MP40 dry and wet sides will not improve noise too much but they will improve performance and durability.

I'm just guessing here, but unless they changed the pole position of the permanent magnet, I would venture to say yes... although you wont get the same results in terms of quietness that has been reported.

I think that they would be far fetched to change the pole position based solely on the cost behind doing it. If it were me, I would want to keep as much as possible the same from old to new and not incur any additional costs. The price behind changing that minor detail would not be financially beneficial.... plus why fix what's not broke.

QuietDrive will still be not compatible with WXM on the release date. =( any idea how far out it will be until they support this ? weeks month years ?

tough to say, I think it all comes down to hammering out all the bugs in the software. I wouldn't imagine that it will be long before having a qd that is compatible with neptune systems

Reef builders has some good info on the new pump.

They also confirm the pump really is bizarrely quiet and the upgraded driver will be less than $100.
