Who's got a big All-glass/Aqueon?

I picked up a new 180 Aqueon. Ordered it from ABC. I was seriously alarmed by how thin the glass is on the standard tank. Granted I'm used to the ironside old school Oceanic.

I'm afraid i just bought a very expensive sump and that I may also have to shell out some more cash for a custom with thicker glass.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Dude, what are you doing over there? New 180? You moving soon or sumpin'?

Return it and get the Marineland Deep Dimension 300 gallon.

believe me I thought about that, but the cost and logistics of getting a new stand and canopy ON TOP OF getting a new tank is prohibitive.

we're putting our house on the market in next few weeks. we have a new house in mind that is ours when we want it, sooner or later, as owners are family friends.

therefore, I figured get a jump. I hate the big megaflows and I hate the huge glass centerbrace in Oceanics. So I ordered a standard 180 with intent of putting in Glass-holes overflows. When we moved it last night I was like "wow this is dinky glass". Makes me nervous.

Wrote to miracles about a standard 180 with thicker glass, waiting on a price.

Anyone have any issues with dinky glass, or advice on tanks with thicker glass and decent pricing???

How thin is the glass?? There are a couple rimless glass thickness calculators out there... maybe one exists for rimmed tanks?

I was suprised when my rimless Miracles tank was the same 1/2" thickness as my rimmed tank (same dimensions), but still safe according to the calculator

I mean, I didn't take a measurement but it's friggin thin. Maybe 1/4 inch?? Definitely not 1/2 or 5/8ths like I'd prefer. My Oceanic is 1/2 inch, possibly Starphire. Not sure it's an old one I got thru Petmart in Batavia way back when. Where's Kenny when ya need him. That place was a goldmine!!!

I'm pretty sure they use 6mm glass on their 55 gallons (roughly 1/4") so it seems like they would up it for something so much bigger. Maybe it 9mm? Don't know if I'd want that either with a tank that size

Not from URS but thought I would chime in with some measurements and see if that helps

My 210g AGA which is only a little taller has 1/2 " glass and was made about a yr and a half ago. My buddy bought a Aqueon 180 about 6-7 mths ago and after a quick call he said his measured out at 1/2" also. I checked a 50g tank I have here and its about 1/4". These are both MF equipped tanks so I dont know if that makes a difference
1/4" on that tank would be really thin for a 6ft long tank. I hope they didn't change the glass thickness over the last few months or so.

Alright, I appreciate the help URS or non-URS, any one is welcome!

I'm gonna have to actually measure the glass, but I'd bet dollars to donuts it's only 1/4 inch. Perhaps the difference is that it's a non-RR tank. Need to get to the bottom of this several hundred dollar gaffe.

RR or not, the glass thickness shouldn't change. My tank is 12mm (about 1/2") but its only 72x18x18, and the extra 6" of height on yours makes a world of difference.

Did you try calling Aqueon toask what the size glass would be on a 180?

Well technically I`m a transplanted general area URS reefer, lived in Rochester (Fairport)area for 23 yrs before I moved to NC.
Yeah that would be an expensive error if it has the thinner glass

My AGA 180 is 1/2". I can't even fathom (no pun intended) using 1/4" glass on a tank that tall, even if it didn't break, i would think it would bulge...

Cully, it should definatly have 1/2'' glass or at the bare minimum 3/8''. Miracles is very particular about safety so anything they make will be okay. If anything, give Derek a call and tell him your situation, he'll help ya. Either way- congrats on the forward movement! :)

Well I'll tell ya, it's not at my house so I can't measure it, but there's no way it's 1/2 inch. I'm telling you the damn thing makes me nervous. I think I'm just gonna have to eat it or use it as a sump or something. Bummer.

the tank height is going to determine the glass thickness. if it's 1/4" it's gotta be tempered and that = no drilling. Unless you're getting a custom glass holes box lets talk about whipping up a nicer custom one.
