Why can San Francisco have a saltwater fish/reef store?

I can't find anything here in the city.i have to drive across the bridge or down south to find a descent store .That embarrassing for a city this size can't support a mom and pop store anymore .

I agree! But to have that high of a population your telling me there are no impulse buyers LOL. I feel not everyone can spend over $175+ every time to get free shipping. Or maybe they can or even do ha ha ha?

lol the 175 free shipping is a psychological marketing trick but ya i know what you mean

6th Avenue aquarium is still around isn't it?? :D

Mom & Pop stores more likely than not won't be at the level of stuff that you want though.

Also why do you want one in San Francisco? San Francisco is a horrible place to do anything, complain about there not being a decent one in Daly City or SSF or some place that has more parking (that's free) :D

When Nippon closed a few years ago, I was bummed. It was one of the few stores worth traveling to from the East Bay. If a store were to survive in SF, it'd need to be like Nippon -- large, plenty of livestock, both fresh and saltwater, and have decent parking. It also had quite a few nice display tanks. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but it was a fun place to shop.

I think I read there was a moratorium on any store selling live animals in sf.. And that if you wanted to do it it's a serious hassle to do so..

That could be old or way off but I remember talking with the guy who opened the duboce reef spot (short lived) about it and he said it was a hassle and cost more to open and run in sf as a new store than other places..

from what i have been told there is severe regulation on any livestock shipped into the sf area which makes it extremely difficult to run a store under these conditions

I dunno, cost of space is so expensive in SF that if you aren't shoe horning every tank you can into a spot, where you almost have to leave the store if you want to change your mind, you need a lot of turn over to pay the bills. One issue with the Duboce place is that it was just too nice, very open feel, I could hang out in that store forever, but without a lot of turn over it's not going to make much money. Plus parking sucked majorly there, building was right next to a parking lot but he didn't own the lot and the owner very happily had cars towed easily, street parking? Yeah if you're lucky at night when everyone under the overhead freeway went home.

Nope. Think about that one for a second. Who would be this entity that stopped livestock from being shipped into the "SF area"? Who would be making the shipper conform to this law for the SF Area? :)

The ban never passed, and it would only precluded a store from selling them, not a shipper shipping them into the area. To control the import into California, CAF&G would be the enforcer of the ban. A city cannot enact importation laws, that is state and federal area.

SF has very few LFS for one major reason.... Cost of doing business in a tourist attraction city with retail square footage going for a premium.

Try saying that with a straight face in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, even NYC :). SoCal has the largest concentration of LFS of pretty much anywhere on the planet!

That's the single most important reason... How many frags would a shop have to sell just to make rent and utilities? Dry goods? There's no margin there considering you can purchase everything online.
