Why do they cost so much ( Test Kits )

I'm with Billy on API . Generally good enough. I like salifert for PO4, and magnesium though.Haven't tried Hach.

Why do some test kits cost so much ? I just paid $30.

If thats expensive. the the hobby might not be for you, Thats is cheap in todays world.

your in a saltwater hobby nothing is cheap example 1 inch sps frags are going for 80 plus come on so i guess the whole mother colony would cost me what 1 grand lol ya id pay that

API kits are under $10.

supply and demand... you get charged what you are willing to pay...
This is a blood sucking hobby and WE love it...
Once you get you SPS big enough to frag you will sell 1" for 80 bucks also.lol

As an aside, my 9yr old (with LOTS of help) made rudimentary test kits (Alk, Ca, Mg) for a science project, but he enjoys learning chemistry.

For his science project, I ordered or brought home reagents. It was more spendy than what I spend for Salifert kits in a year, but I think all three DIY kits are accurate enough for reefing.

Hobby kits don't have to be all that accurate. Stability is more important IMHO.
