why does nobody ship coral?

So I'm on a lot of forums and seems like a lot of people on this one don't ship? I understand the risks of shipping and does but most people have a pretty good success when it comes to shipping. Whats everyones thoughts on shipping?

Seeing as you don't have enough posts to see the "for sale" section of the forums yet, I'm not sure what you mean?

I have bought several corals from this forum, and all were shipped to me.

If you mean local reefers rather than online businesses ..... I imagine it's complexity avoidance. I trade frags all the time and simply cannot be bothered with shipping; it's a major hassle. I want to enjoy my hobby.

Shipping is a PITA. Packing, heating packs, the hassle of getting the package to the pickup point. Beyond that, overnight shipping is pretty expensive for non-business clients.

For most hobbyists, it's just not worth the effort.

When I shipped corals, I have to take a day off to pack and ship on weekday. This is a great loosing proposition for me. There is no way I can sell enough to compensate for my lost of income from time off work. I stop doing this very quickly. Now I just trade at home or at frag swabs. These events happen on weekend and evening, a lot of fun meeting friends, and I don't have to take time off work to participate.

seems like people in local clubs selling corals are the ones not wanting to ship, when i sell coral I go home at 2 and pack up the coral and I'm at ups by 3 and corals overnighted and Ive only had 4 DOA's in prob 50 shipments

I’d be willing to bet most people posting in local club forums are wanting to sell locally. There is a selling forum on here that you will get once you hit a certain amount of posts, those will ship. Local club forums are run by the local club people. If they want to sell long distance they will be posting in the normal sale forums.

It's not that they, (I), can't, it's just that they, (I), won't. For local guys, you come to my house, I go to yours. Makes it cheaper, you get to see what you're buying, if it dies, it's your fault. Easy, peasy.

I used to do this too and still would for people I know or friends of friends. The rest of my frags go to the LFS for credit. I want them to make money so they are there when I need them.

I added emphasis because I think you've answered your own question.

This site has a livestock for-sale forum, but you don't have enough posts to see it yet. When people want to ship, they generally post there. When they want to sell directly to locals, they generally post on a club forum. You're only seeing half the story, so you're seeing a bias that probably isn't true.

What everyone else said..... And i know around here overnight shipping is very expensive. You either would make zero money or possibly lose money. Then if the coral dies ,then what?

+1 on shipping costs. Overnighting inside my own state is $40-50 on most shipping carriers. I've paid as much as $100 for overnight fedex (receipt included). You pretty much have to give sps away if you want to ship them. Why pay $100 more in shipping from a forum member you know nothing about, when you can order from a major reputable aquaculture site for free shipping? It's a pain for me. I have to CULL sps that grow too big because nobody local will buy them or even take them free. There is basically zero hobbyist community where I live
