Why so many build threads in the SPS forum?

Leately all I c is this build thread that build thread in a forum that to my understanding relates to SPS.

Does anybody feel the same way here---- While I do understand that many of this builds eventually become sps dominated tanks in my opinion they take away from the specifics of the forum.

Aw hile back the forum was all about ID this coral for me, until the new subsection was created-- hint

Any thoughts?

How does people sharing their ideas and projects detract from the sps community?

We all might not have giant, perfect sps only reefs, but those of us in this forum love our sps corals and like being part of the community.

I personally love the build threads. They are full of knowledge, what to do, what to avoid, discussion on this or that...

I believe build threads are the pentacle of sps forums. I can post ID pictures, or questions related to my colored sticks; but what makes the forum, displays the knowledge and experience, is the build thread.

Build threads are a welcomed post in this forum, IMO. The main sticky on this forum is a build thread after all!! You have to love a reef in the sky!

They get placed here because people think they will get better peer related comments when building an SPS centric tank. However, most of us do get out to the other forums.....

The Sticky that was referred to was the Thread of the Month recently, I am unsure why it is still up there, but there must be a good reason....

There is a Large Tank Forum for those build threads that qualify there.

There is a Nano Tank Forum for builds of those sizes.

Your local club forum and Reef Discussion are the perfect places for tank builds neither large or small. I highly recommend your local club forum on RC.

Both the Large Tank and the Nano Tank Forums on RC are dedicated to the specific needs of those extremes. The rest of RC pretty much is for the "average" tank, where to put them seems to confuse people.

Yes the topic has been brought up regarding the creation of another forum for the "middle childeren", but where does it end? BB subforums, SSB subforums, DSB subforums? I doubt it will happen so where does that leave us?

Other than that here are my personal opinions on this topic......

The ONLY tank threads I would like to see here personally are ones that show mature, fully functional, thriving, SPS systems. Where not only is it a "show and tell", but how the choices they made during the build process effects the overall health of the SPS in the system. See the obvious connection to the SPS forum......kinda key IMO.

The RC SPS forum is found within the "coral forums" heading when seen in the index....I stress the operative words "coral forums".

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/index.php

I have seen hundreds (if not thousands) of build threads on RC. Odds are most build threads are the same thing we have seen multiple times already (nothing wrong with that, just not the forefront of SPS discussion me thinks).....and would rather keep the information that is relevant today with regards to general SPS discussion at the top of the forum, and not have someones daily twitter-esque blog about what lights they are going put on a tank that doesn't even have water in it yet.

I understand you want feed back from those who you consider your "peers" with regards to the setup.

I understand you want people to see your thread and want it in a place that maximizes this.

I understand you are excited and proud of your project, I am in no way trying to detract from this.

You are however detracting from the topic du jour "SPS" which is the reason I come here....and not the LPS forum.....and it "ain't" for the build threads!!

So in my own personal way to combat this issue, I don't look at any build threads placed here, nor respond to them.....and let them simply fall away to page 8,9,10.......please join me in doing so.

EDIT: Doug nailed it ^^^

BTW Manny, glad to see you got some real fish back in that glass box of yours ;)

yeah yeah I could not stay away:beer:

Thx for the explanation Doug.
It seems that a tank goes up and 3 months later, 30 acros are in there thus the build thread, giving this false sense of security for all the readers that WOW i want one of those- like a prefab condo- ready to live in.

Manny, This is something I have never understood. This is a forum for SPS corals. There are other forums for build threads (even though they were not started for that purpose). I love it when I click on a thread and see a tank with more LPS than anything else.

Maybe its me, but I think it comes down to ego. "I want people to look at my tank", so I'm going to put it in the SPS forum.

This may not be a big deal to many and I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I've never understood why there are non sps things in the sps forum :spin2:

Well in Doug :p

I understand there is a large tank and a nano forum but why cant there be a build thread forum for all. Limit all build threads to one forum regardless of size and other details.

Mark, I agree completely with you and the thread starter.

I believe that all of the other tank builds are in reef discussion. I would think that sometimes being such a large board makes any types of transition like a forum realignment would be a massive task.

It was said in the past, that the members manage the content of the forums. This is and will always be true. When this forum started to become littered with build threads, I found myself visiting less and less. This is nothing against build threads, but this forum was always my safe haven for my obsession with SPS corals.

As many know, I am a huge fan of build threads as I might have one of the most split threads in the history of build threads (when they used to split), but I've always been an advocate for rules; especially when in comes to this hobby. Its the little things that can make or break things. Just imagine if you continually did water changes with 1.022 SG water. It might not be the first or second water change, but over time, it would be noticeable.

I think is very simple, if you don´t like, just don´t read

I love build thread because I can learn a lot, and I love to see the evolution

I think we are in a democracy, aren´t we ?

Best Regards

It isn't as simple as "if you don't like, just don't read" in my opinion. This is the SPS forum, and when a thread is posted here it is presumably SPS related, or it is off topic clutter that belongs elsewhere. So when someone starts a thread titled "My (insert number here) Gallon Tank" I click the link expecting to see it containing content related to SPS keeping, not a thread on how they put together their 2x4" stand for a build they are starting. While build threads are interesting sometimes, they should more appropriately be located elsewhere. A dedicated section for build threads would be a great idea. Then everyone who loves build threads because they can learn a lot, and who love to see the evolution will know right where to look for the appropriate content and everyone wins.

Great topic!! :thumbs up:

I love build thread because I can learn a lot, and I love to see the evolution

I think we all do but the point is that they belong in the appropriate forum. It doesn't make sense for so many builds to be in a coral forum :D

Not much to say that Mark and Doug didn't already say....

+1:thumbsup: I like the builds that is if they are sps builds.

The sps forum is for anything sps related. Be it the corals, lighting, builds or whatever. I feel this forum is for people that want info or help with anything sps related. For example someone may ask a lighting question for their sps. This question is suitable for the lighting filtration forum and the sps forum, it relates to both subjects. Just dont ask a chemistry question in the lighting filtration forum, that is the wrong forum.

I think it´s a misunderstanding here

If you guys want to create a specific forum for build threads, ok, but you will have to create a forum for :

- Show your aquascape

- Show your best pic top down

- Show you tanks with T5 and MH

And a lot of others threads.........

The happiness is only true when shared. I love to share my tank, I love to see a lot of tanks around the world.

How many build threads we have here ? I can´t count more than ten....for me is not a problem.

Best Regards

I agree. I'd rather see progression shots of SPS tanks in this forum. I also agree with one of the other posters that we should have one forum dedicated to just builds, no matter the size.
