Why SPS - aren't they a little boring?

I have a staghorn acro that each branch grows an inch a month. You will not see that kind of growth out of LPS. I do have a mixed reef tank but I have zones. High light high flow around the SPS which is near the returns from sump and lower light lower flow around the LPS and then my huge green toadstool near the overflows so its slime does not harm my SPS. Watching my SPS grow is amazing. I can't wait to come home everyday and see how much they have grown while I have been at work. I do love my chalices but so many SPS colors. My strawberry shortcake SPS is bright lime green with bright pink polyps. My favorite piece.
 
idk man. I like talking to other SPS guys just because I instantly know how crazy they are. When ever someone comes over to see my tank; new girl, friends,...no one knows/appreciates the level of dedication to the hobby to get sps to really color up and thrive. All the LPS and fish get the attention. Only we know what we go through, and that kind of makes us all special. :)
 
For me it's color, shape and the challenge in that order. I'm not a seasoned SPS guy but that's it for me. My tank wouldn't feel complete without the colorful branches working their way up the water column. I love acans, zoas and euphyllia and I keep them all but something would be missing without those shapes.

Also, half of the fun in this hobby for me is the tinkering and constant search to make my system more efficient, consistent and better. SPS are a challenge so it gives me an excuse to search for new ways to make the system tip top and consistent and tinker with it. If I wanted a tank that I cold just feed once or twice a day and otherwise ignore I'd keep a beta in a 6 gallon AIO. Those things can survive a nuclear blast.

If you think that SPS are boring search google image for the following: GARF purple bonsai, rouge millepora, cali tort, oregon tort among hundreds of other awesome looking SPS corals. They may not wave around like a hammer coral but they're still stunning to look at.

That's just my personal perspective.
 
Because they are like women, sexxy! but unlike women i can own numerous different ones that all have some different beauty to them but with out losing half my belongings to them and without the nagging! they are also as costly as women lol!!
i started dabbling into sps 6 months after my first tank and havent looked back since then.
 
Like said before, I too play video games on hard core only. I enjoy the fact that I'm maintaining an echo system that is alwayse and will alwayse be on the verge of collaps.

Sps are beautifull!

Don't tell anyone but I LOVE the smell, I sometimes pull frags out just to smell them.

This is funny because I thought I was the only one that kind of liked the smell too. There is something great about smelling an acro colony out of the water.....but I am really odd.
 
Man, I gotta be honest guys that creeps me out a little bit...but then, I actually like the smell of skimmate so who am I to judge? :lmao:
 
SPS,,,a few years ago,,,i stay in the house for 3 consecutive days 58 degree//no power during the storm//just to keep filled up my generator/running my tank from generator power/just to keep my sps a live//luckly no lost,,,is it called SPS nuts:bounce3:

Every once in a while when there were no good waves, some buddies and I would throw on a snorkel and mask to have a look. I was in utter awe of the SPS colors and shapes, with tridacnid clams fluorescing in the sun.

I guess if I was into scuba diving I may have taken an affinity to LPS and soft corals, but growing SPS (aside from the challenge), takes me back to a time before adult responsibilities and children when life was just a bit more carefree. Often, I'll catch myself staring at the tank and thinking about those days. Then I look at my little frags and beg them to grow.:hmm5:

My 2 hobbies are surfing and reefing...
The tank gets more attention though, lol, damn E.Coast waves...lol... Just kidding, we get waves all the time, and the only thing better for me than being out in the water, is to be creating a reef paradise, sps dominated of course... I unlike you have yet to surf the pacific and am envious of that, but maybe one day, I can only imagine fiji, indo, tahiti, some of the best waves out there, and some of the most stunning reefs too, of course Australia as well... :)

Wow, Gorgeous Tank and Love the Emperator. I almost fell asleep looking at it though...Sweet. Yes, Dog boys tank isnt just boring, it looks unnatural as well because its bare bottom. I think its going to crash any minute though as some of the sand in my remote DSB is over 10 years old. We all know that those never work for more than a year or so either....Its great to some one else keeping the angels the way they are meant to be kept. Thank you for sharing.
 
Gary, I cant believe you get away with the carpets with your fish. Mine are all in the sump as they eventually would get any tang i tried to put in my old 180 with them. They all live in my remote DSB now and do well. They only eat what i give them.
 
SPS are dope in general. But like others have said hard telling if its dieing or thriving, or if someone or something is *****ng it off. Like right now I have a frag that was full poly extension and green and now tonight i get home abd the bottom have is closed up! Beats the hell outa me.
