Wild and Maricultured SPS Reefers Thread

to my knowledge, neither suharsonoi nor caroliniana are particularly light needy.. but it can't hurt to try a different position… or, as has been suggested earlier, you could try putting a couple of fags in various places in the tank and see which does best..

I actually did that when I first got the piece in. It was large enough that I got 3 frags and they are all in different flow and light areas though none are in an area of particularly high light. The frag I mentioned above that is 18" from the light is prob in the highest and most direct light

Hi Reef mutt nice piece the branch structure is to dense to be a not elongated enough to be a. suharsonoi my bet is a purple carolinia

zarfish from the pics the corals look good your 2nd pic a. clathrata yellow with pink tip looks slightly bleached but sometimes comes in like that. Usually do 24hrs no light Always do strong flow go with the flow u think is a lot and double it lol then I start med light then go to strong light strong flow

I meant if you find flat worms I give 4 weeks then recheck visual inspect 1 time per week. I get alittle freaked out and baste the heck out of them and usually damage tissue but have not flat worms since I moved 2 years ago

I dip several different dips

usually 1 dip every 5 days rotating dip types even tried (hydrogen peroxide works good as well pulls stuff right off) if I feel lucky every 3 days but hate to be to hard on corals (except potential pest ones)

watch at night after dipping for polyp extension baste off any excessive slim and watch corals that don't react well for shorter bath next dip

For maricultured I stopped cutting off the base and just inspect for pests and damage usually I dip 10 pieces at a time

Thanks for the advise I really checked them all and decided to put 4 of them in my display. They had good polyp extension but have a lot of bleaching. I do have a lot of flow in my display and have atlantik orpheck lights on them which have a program called acclimation on them that seem to have worked always. The other have lost a lot a slime and only found one with a little worm on it that I picked out. Up to now I have done 3 dips with 4 different types of dips. Never tried peroxide. For how long should I dip them. Should i dilute the peroxide? Just regular Walgreen peroxide will do?

Some of the corals I have not seen any polyps on them but keeping them in quarantine And feeding sps max from dr G in hopes of seem some polyps soon. I do think the shipping was not the best as the water was very cold when they arrived and they where stuck in atlanta for some time with a lot of cold weather. Also 2 of the bags the water was completely brown even to the point of been muddy. Guess that is part of the cost when you buy directly shipped from fiji boxes. You get larger colonies at better prices but you run the risk of some not making it.

I will take some pics tomorrow so you can see the progress if any.

Really appreciate the feedback and advise.

Zarfish i quite often find acros in that bleached condition for sale at my LFS and never hesitate to buy them. They color up much quicker than brown outs and you can at least have an idea of colors in most cases. As long as the tissue is on the branches and the polyps remain you can nurse an acro back to health.

Give them low light for a week or two with good flow and then begin to move them up a bit but no higher than medium light intensity. Btw any low light deep water ones will color up on the bottom which makes it easy to know where they should go. If you're keeping them in Q with sterile water i'd be inclined to put a drop or two of aminos in the water each day or some sort of nutrition.

The main thing to watch for always is PE not the color. If any have good PE during the day then you can move them up a bit if you like. If PE only at night then leave them down. No PE at all anytime - the most stressed and the ones to watch closely.

That's just how i treat most of my new wild acros, others might have a different take on things. :)

That looks cool Matt, i never see those smooth skinned acros in my LFS's - wish i did :( I'm calling it as purple, if it turns green just bin it............:smokin:

Thanks biggles for the advise i will take. Experimenting with them to see what works better. In my tanks. Hope to see some polyp extension on skmr of the that have given non up to now.

Here is the pics of how the corals are doing. Any thoughts??? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389804353.149249.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1389804364.498938.jpgView attachment 260123ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389804384.499166.jpgView attachment 260125View attachment 260126

Can anybody tell me what kind of worm is this? Is it bad o good? Should I remove it? It is living on one of my corals in quarantineImageUploadedByTapatalk1389838377.464277.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1389838391.829590.jpg

I figured I'd throw this up here..
This was originally pale cream/green body with sky blue tips when it first came in..
Been in my tank for 3 weeks and bleh!

I feel that it will come back better than ever, eventually.
I have it right on the bottom of my tank with one frag more in the middle.
I wanted to post it as a reference for when I get it looking like a coral from another world and post the after shot!!

Picked this wild colony up around 3 weeks ago. I was watching this coral for over a month in the store and couldn't believe nobody picked it up. Starting seeing a little color coming out it it so I had to jump on it. Anyone have an idea of what it might be species wise?

Pic from in store

Three weeks in my tank. 2 weeks under radion and this last week under a radium 250 lumen arc.

Also picked up this saharanos (sp) colony I hope colors up

My experience is they all bleach out and look like reefmut's. I don't know if it's stress, lack of light or dipping. About 80 percent recover. About 40 percent of those look like they did when I bought them. Most come back a different color.

Here's two new branch pieces i bought about 10 days ago. The echinata had tan brown branches at the store but is paling nicely in the time i've had it under the Radium :) No idea what the bleached washed out one will color up like - obviously i won't be happy if Matt's piece colors up better than mine.............

That before and after looks great jfuka78, very nice score mate and nicer work coloring it up  Look forward to seeing what color that suharsonoi turns out to be mate, i've never seen one in real life :(

Here's a great place to use for coral ID's btw or use it to check acro names spelling like i do lol.

Biggles,
Where do you have that ehinata in your tank? I picked one up over a month ago and it has a tan base with bright blue tips. I moved it up to the top but not directly under the pucks of my radions.

What alk is everyone running at for the wild pieces ? I have been acquiring a few over the last few months. I have noticed they are pretty sensitive to alk levels . Like half a point. I try to keep it around 8 but noticed when the alk starts to drop I get my best colors(7.7).Then once it levels out they still have color but not as viberent. Has anyone else noticed this?

I feel the same way, best colors were just under 8. I had a little spike so I am hovering around 9.8 for a while to see what happens.

Biggles, echinatas are one of my favorite acros.. Love the colours and the growth pattern...
Here's an interim colour shot of the last acro I posted..
The supposed suharsonoi hasn't done much yet..

Sorry for the crap iPhone shot.. Since it's at the Potok of my tank, a top down shot is tough..

does anybody know why my shots come in with such low quality? i always use photobucket.
is there a way of changing the settings of photobucket to increase the uploaded quality?

Hey Matt, 1024x768 is the size all images will be resized and displayed as unless you set the options to display images as full size - click on the top right icon in the upload box for image settings.

Thanks Biggles.. It's been so long since I used anything other than my phone to upload photos, it took my forever to find that option on the desktop site. This is a setting I don't think I you can adjust on the mobile site..
I'll see if it makes a difference on the mobile app upload.
