Personally, I prefer o2manyfish's original suggestion of adding a waste drain vent. This is exactly how modern homes are plumbed, with a path for air to be drawn into the drain stack behind the draining water so that at no time can a bubble form in the pipes at any locking point caused by bends or changes in pipe diameter.

Inserting valves and trying to manually control the flow is a lot of work fraught with uncertainty. Drains do not always run at a consistent rate. A venting system is a hands-off method that is self-regulating. Just an opinion.

Update:

Happy new year!
(In Feb)
lol

I will put together a full-blown update with videos and the like in the (somewhat) near future.
So far, so good. There has been good, bad, & ugly. Think back to your first six months of running salt water.
The fish are getting bigger, the corals are showing nice PE and growth, and the fuge is full.
We really love the system, but it could have been bigger ;P.

Looking forward to the up date, really like your vision. Great example of thinking out side of the box,yet covering the basics. Mike

Just read through all 14 pages! Sweet system! Also, I love the Shedd Aquarium! That would be a sweet tank to have in a home!
Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Mike, thanks for the kind words!

Haven't gotten around to the update yet, soon . . .
In the mean time, some current FTS.
Any close up pictures of the tanks?

A couple things about those photos.
I used a GoPro Hero3 (wide angle, can ya tell!?).
I took them after it was dark out to eliminate reflections so I turned up the lights to take the pix (so I 'woke everyone up' - except the fuge, it's on a reverse photo period).

Peace

I think that you already told me i forgot and couldnt find it any where. Whats the models of yor reef dynamics grear?
it turned out great

Any updates buddy?
Yeah, I traded in my STI for a Q5 TDI. lol

It's always an honor to see updates on this system. Your series of tanks look good and the go pro shots are sick.
The honor is mine & happy to share! As always, thanks for the kind words! It's awesome to have knowledgeable & experienced reefers here "at one's finger tips" as mentors!

Keep up the great work!
Thanks, I'm gonna try!

Sweet build man! Soo nice when stuff starts to come together!
Thanks! You should come check it out now that it's done, you are close enough.

Looks like you are having fun.. When it's all done and running I am gonna make trip up to see it :-)
I try to ALWAYS have fun!
Anthony, you are welcome anytime! Maybe next time you go to ARS as I am only 12 minutes from there . . . ?

At the top of that 3" drain line you should have a vent line. With a fall that much you will get trapped air trying to go back up the pipe and a big bubble will block your top inlet (to the 3") and the overflow will stop working. All you need is a small line run from the top of the drain line to above the water height of the uppermost tank.

Dave,
I tried something similar. . .
I ran the tube to the same location BUT on the INSIDE of the drain. I drilled a hole in the top of the maggie muffler & ran the tubing (INSIDE the drain) to the top of the 3" drain. It wasn't any quieter, it has never become blocked . . .
There is a leak detector in the pan and the Apex will turn off the pump & email/text me in the event of a leak (or overflow) . . .
I am thinking of converting the existing plumbing to a Herbie, as siphons are silent.

What stay's are those for that lid?
I upgraded to more 'beefy' lid stays, same brand (Hafele) to the Maxi line. They come in "A", "B", "C", or "D" depending upon size & weight of the door . . .

I am going to have an 'open house' June 21st from 4 - 7 PM to celebrate 1 year of running saltwater.
All are welcome (must RSVP via PM) to come & check it out. Bring the significant other &/or kids. I am by Valley Forge National Park & the King of Prussia Mall.
That's all for now.
Peace out!
