Combating HA with scrubbing rock.

This is a before picture. Top Right rock (dome) and the one it is setting on, just to it's left. Then the FAR left rock are shown below in the after pictures.

A little friend that is about 9 inches long, minimum, that is all that came out a while ago when I was trying to measure him. In this picture he is only showing a little bit.

WOW!!! How did that little bugger sneak in there. Other than scrubbing the afro algae, what are you using to keep phosphates down. Is that Marco rock because it has been known to have some initial hair algae and then suddenly go away.
 
Look at my signature... I have bristle worms all in the tank. That is why the + is on it... Not for size... but at one time I have only seen 8... HAHAHAHAHA... I prob have about 100+ most are about the size of a tooth pick. This guy, and he has a friend, are large... and are actually coming out in the day time more and more. I think it is more because I am not feeding as much trying to starve out the HA. I think I will increase my feeding some. Espc since a peppermint was seen eating a snail.

Yeah... I had some HA when I moved from the OLD 120 to the new 180. I thought I would just knock it off when I moved the rock. But I moved it a little bit at a time, To help with cycle and seed it too. So I forgot to as I moved it. I was finally tired of it and did not want to post any new video's or pic because of how it looks at time.

But I know I have to start somewhere, and the first step is admitting you have a problem. Then get help.

My old setup was JUST two canister filters and a HOB skimmer.

When this opportunity came along to upgrade I said I was going to put in a SUMP no matter what. So... The sump has LR, LS, cheato, skimmer, GFO and CARBON.

But I did not use all the new rock. That is just a copy from the order. I used ALL of my existing rock about 100 lb and prob about 130lb+ of the new...

Is there a way to have the skimmer in the middle? Try to follow me here.

The pump back to the displays are t off, one going to the tank the other to a third water container. I will call this the skimmer sump (SS). The skimmer would the draw water from this SS. The water could then be returned to each of the 180/120 sump with one pump T off with gate valves?

Not sure if this complicates thing to much, but just an alternative. The SS could be a mangrove tank. :)

I like the idea but I am afraid if I do that I will run out of room.

Going from right at the plug, up against the wall from the second picture.
It would most likely go right along to where that post is sitting in the first two pictures. Up against the edge would allow for 3 sided viewing, but in the corner would give more space around the floor, just a unsightly cord going from that plug to the tank. (I like the middle of the wall with 3 sided viewing better)

So you can see where the skimmer sits.


I like the idea, I am just short on space on that side.

I can NOT use the other side because that is where the countertop/sink/cabinet/fridge/freezer are going. The QT will sit on top of the counter, in the corner, always ready and waiting, with a water change on that weekly with the old water from the DT. (its only 10g) ALSO this is the wet wall so the RO is already hanging there too.

You can not see it but it is between the last two (shown) patch points above the seam.

glad to see you upgraded from those canister filters,,,they were the worst for my fresh water setups. and i hear ya on the 120 and losing too much room...but u prolly already made the decision. so just come to terms with it lol...set it uppppp HA..

AND nice looking anemone sir....
 
I am setting it up... Have to paint and all first... HAHAHA...

1st Muddying done. Sand and second muddying tonight. (Why does that word not look right?)

Any way... Once that is done PAINT....Then to SEAL the floor with the concrete paint. So I have to make sure the tank is self sufficient. so It can dry and then put a second coat on it.

After that NEW custom stand for the 120, and make a sump to fit the tanks)

My alk has gone from 11 to 9.1 over the past 2 weeks.

All my other stats have been good. I decided to post these for others to look and see even to try and see if I am doing something wrong.

Ohhh Phospates are at .12 I just changed out my GFO and Carbon last night. I bumped up my GFO some to combat the HA I have. I have already started to tackle it MANUALLY and that tackle is KICKING BUTT!

The last section I cleaned off Sat had 4 Turbos and 8+ hermits on it in the AM. WOW... They were getting to all the little items and cleaning it.

Interesting. Comments?

Great job so far. Just keep brushing algae, just keep brushing algae, just keep, oh sorry, got caught up. Parameters are looking good though although I don't know much about ORP.

Thanks though. I was very happy for cleaning it off. I have off from work (spring break) the rest of the week and I plan on getting a lot more done.

The actual cleaning of it off was simple and easy. Does not seem like a hard job. I took the chair adapter off the vacuum and soaked it in vinegar for three days.

Put a few rubber bands around the hose I use for water changes. Built it up and just slipped the adapter right over the rubber bands. Sat right on it and sealed it. Then I started the siphon and brushed away algae at the same time. Made it suck it up at the same time. Just could not pull away from the rock real quick as it would leave a algae trail in the water.

Quick simple and really easy.
 
Yeah he will follow me all over the tank. I walk up to it and he come up to look out.

I am waiting for the cat to sit there and tease him.

That pump will certainly get the jump done. Do you have a chiller? I am lazy and tired tonight, and don't feel like reading through. My thought is pump equal heat. You are submersing these right?

Just a thought.
 
No chiller. In basement that stays normally about 66 in winter and 75 in summer.

I understand what you mean about heat. That will give me a place to put the compressor if I put my 120 over where I talked about. If I need to put a chiller in.
