Would you like some coral with that aiptasia?

I was in one of the LFS the other day. I won't mention their name, but it rhymes with leaf vulture. I was in the market to buy some coral, but couldn't help noticing that a few of their tanks had an aiptasia problem. I'm not talking about your normal garden variety aiptasia problem. I'm talking about complete infestation.

I couldn't bring myself to buy anything because I didn't want my tank to suffer the same dreadful outcome. Am I being to paranoid or have others felt the same way?

You didn't even have to mention the rhyming name we all know which it is. Problem for them is they won't ever get rid of it. Their integrated system is too vast. AT has aptasia in their system too. I got chaeto from them and bam!!! My first aptasia and bryopsis... this is one of the reasons why I refuse ti buy corals from lfs. I feel fellow reefers who frag are more aware and caring about theae pests

I tool my wife there, whose just staring to get in to reefing. Her response was "ewe what are all those ugly things everywhere?"

I like to support great customer service LFS as much as I can without hurting my wallet.. But since I got here and been around a few LFS, Im surprised on coral selection on a few places..

Certain LFS have great setups and even one makes it feel like you are in home...

But yeah I stay away from places that there coral selection is affected

The funny thing is they sell products that gets rid of this problem

You can't solve that type of Aiptasia outbreak with Aiptasia X, lol. It's going to require a HUGE population of berghia nudis. It's my understanding that RC is in the process of trying to stymy the issue (You will notice their primary frag tank looks like it went through a big clean in the last 2 weeks.) I even saw a tank with just aiptasia in it last time I walked in - my assumption is they are testing solutions.

This is the problem with LFS/holding facilities: large amounts of coral and liverock pass through those central-filtration tanks. Every single one has some sort of nuisance algae/inverts. Look carefuly and you will see it in even the cleanest LFS (bubble algae here, colonial hydroids there, etc)

Your best defense is a good acclimation procedure that includes coral dip and quarantine.

If the coral is awesome....no aptasia is going to stop me from getting it.

ME TOO! This is how I got my nasty aptasia and manjo outbreak. I had to have those purple daisy polyps! lol.. Now I have a wonderful little file fish who ate them all gone!!! I LOVE HIM! I told LOSTMYZ I'd share with him but I have yet to officialy give him up. I kind of dont want to because I still see one or two pop up and then in a couple days they are gone again. He isnt picking at any of my other corals (that I have noticed) so I'm very happy with him.

I hear ya. But, there are a lot LFS out there that don't seem to have this chronic problem like leaf vulture does. It just seems like there has been a lack of maintenance or care to let it get to this level. Given the choice, I would rather buy from a LFS that doesn't have aiptasia the size of my hand lurking in their tanks.

I'm a still waiting on him. Areucrazy is really attached.... lol

It is just not in Arizona I have noticed it here in wisconsin also. I had one guy tell me they were button polyps but they would not charge extra. go figure.

I've never had difficulty getting rid of aiptasia so I really don't worry. Now, flat worms and majano, they turn me off from a purchase.

+1 I agree. With a QT there should be no issues.

Yep. Always QT. Can't blame someone else if you don't. I keep a group of hungry peppermint shrimp for any aiptasia, they are working over some live rock i got from someone right now.

QT, if anything will break out like that it can be controlled in a QT.

If you QT in a strict timely procedure, then you will not have issues. A QT is a great investment in so many ways.

BTW did I mention you should QT everything. :deadhorse1:
