I am looking to add a wrasse to my aquarium and I have been reading that some types may eat shrimp and I have two cleaner shrimp that I would rather not get eaten :spin3:here are the wrasse I am looking at:

Any type of flasher
Hoeven's
Red Velvet
Whip Fin
Leopard
Long Fin

Would any of these work?

Thanks in advance

im pretty sure the only one you would have to be concerned with is the hoevens. All the fairies, flashers, and leopard wrasses are all safe.

I've seen several aquarists on this forum that have mixed Hoeven's and wrasse with varying results. It may be as simple as proper feedings or could be a matter of the individual fish. For what it's worth, I plan on trying to house them together in the fairly new future. I like the rest of your list.

I think it's a function of how long people have had their melanurus. Old adults are BIG. Shockingly big, compared to what you see in the LFS.

This. Mine eventually DID take out my two peppermint shrimp. Not to mention plenty of snails and hermits.

That, plus order of addition too. If the shrimp(s) exist first and the melanurus isn't full grown, you can pull it off. Unless you don't feed enough and he gets hungry. :)

They recognize every time you put something in the tank, it's a potential food item. So if you try to add shrimp later on...

My 6 line ate my turbo snail, 2 peppermint's, and goby!

WOW talk about a fish with an attitude!
My 6-line leaves my turbos, peppermints, and goby alone thankfully.
Just like humans they all have their own personalities.
Shame about your stock though. :(

I have a hoevens and he ate my shrimp, not sure about the others

Hoevens is an awesome fish though. Recently ordered one online and ended up with a Dusky instead. A nice fish too!

Would love to get a trio of leopards but I already have too many fish in my 90 gal.

Yea, you can say the wrassle has had some expensive meals :sad2:

Better off with leopards first. Wait for your next tank. Lol

I have a male in one tank hes taken out limpets but thats it. Female in another tank has not even touched ghost shrimp let alone fire & cleaner. Wrasse was added af.ter shrimp.

Got that right. Is the Wrasse still around?

Yep, it gets along great with my occilaris clown and kauderns Cardinal but seems to have a massive hate for shrimp :/ - The Turbo snail is what really threw me off, it kept nipping at him and he eventaully died after a week from the consistant abuse! made me just wanna :uzi:

I've got a big melanurus and a big pink margin wrasse; both have been model citizens with respect to a blood shrimp that was in the tank first; that said I wouldn't think any shrimp I add to the tank now would fare too well. Plus my snails and hermits all hide during the day and only come out once the melanurus goes to bed. If I were to try adding some more shrimp, I'd probably catch the melanurus and put him in the sump for a week or so beforehand; I'd take my chances leaving the pink margin wrasse in the tank.

My melarunus is 6 inches easy, and hasn't gone after either of my shrimp. I get scared though everyitme I feed krill, mysis, or fresh shrimp chopped up he will make the connection.
