Yellow H. magnifica

Sorry to hear that bro. Same thing happened to me Minh. Had an almost 5 year old perfectly awesome blue S. gigantea, got greedy and added another one that was sick and quickly wiped out my established one in a matter of a week or so.

I've seen people do the same thing with elegance coral as well. They'll have an established healthy one for years, then go on to add an infected specimen only to wipe out their healthy one in a couple weeks.

You've been here long enough to remember the old diseased Pohnpei maxima clam fiasco as well...

Live and learn brother.

sorry to hear about that mihn. you contributed some great pictures and inspiration with this thread. i hope you continue to keep great animals and share the pics and stories with us.

I finally got another H. magnifica. It is a lavender base yellow tipped Magnifica. doing well in my tank for about 2 weeks. The problem is that my Onyx Percula faded color in it. Here are two pictures from last night. I need to get the light change and some carbon to decrease the yellow tint in the water. Here is my new Magnifica. I guess I just keep this thread instead of starting a new one.

The anemone just arrive to the LFS here in Corpus Christi. He was at the LFS for about 1 week before I got him home. I am feeding him a small amount every other day at this time. I have him on a upside-down flower vase. I will need to construct a pedestal for him in the near future.

Any tips on how to get clowns to host so fast? My mag has been well established for 4 months now and I added pair of saddlebacks 2months ago but they won't host?

Magnifica is not a natural host of Saddleback. That is a reason. If you have a Haddoni carpet, then will be in it in 5 mins or less. I like to use natural pair clownfish and host

Minh,
Congrats on the recent acquisition! I have a pair of Rod's Onyx percs in my Ritteri. For a period of time, they went from black to brown. They have since gone back to black. I dont have any hard fast reasons or solid theories as to what caused the color shift...although I suspect it might be due to feeding in my case. I run a bare bottom tank and feed less.

Minh,
Here are some pics of what I'm talking about.

Female Onyx all black, Aug 2006.

Brown Onyx pics from Sept 2007

Same female Onyx in all three shots, this time from Dec 13th, 2010

All three shots show the same female and anemone. I lost the male shown in the first shot shortly afterwards. The last two shots show the same male.

Sorry the pics are so crappy, but they show you what I'm talking about.

I think it is great that your great looking clowns turn back to black. The dorsal fin of the female still stay some what yellow but otherwise the Onyx return back on Onyx.
Great looking clowns and anemone.

OrionN, I'm so sorry to hear about your losses, but glad you've gotten another gorgeous magnfica and that it's doing well.

I have so much respect for the experienced aquarists here who keep species like magnificas and carpets alive and thriving (and even spawning and cloning in some cases)...I'm a nervous new anemone-keeper who's still amazed and gratified that I've kept a cloned RBTA alive for almost 2 months now! :p

Thanks Minh. I've had the anemone for going on 5 years now. I almost lost it like you lost your most recent one...from infection introduced by another anemone.

I'm "re-habbing" a small lavender based Ritteri right now as well. I've had it for over 2.5 months now. Initially, it went gray, did not attach, and refused to eat. Then it bleached a bit. I did not think it would survive.

It's gaining color back, to a warm tan, and its attached to the little basket its been "re-habbing" in. Its eatting once every other day, and I'm beginning to have confidence in its survival.

Anyone have problem with feeding H. magnifica clams or oyster? When ever I feed them either clams or oyster, they will deflated for 1 day or so. I have since shy away from feeding them shell fish. The clams I used was frozen steamer clams. When I feed them oyster, the oyster just taken out of Corpus Christi bay.
I guess shellfish are not natural food of Magnifica anemone. May be it is just me.
For those who keep H. magnifica, what is your experience in feeding shell fish to your anemone?

Minh,
I feed my Ritteri's scallop pieces from time to time, with no problems. Feeding response is the same as when I feed uncooked shrimp or mysis/mysids to the tank.

I've never tried to feed my anemone's any other sort of shellfish besides scallop.

Nick

I also have fed scallops without any issues, as I recall. It's been a long time since I've fed mussel. I remember my mags didn't seem to have as eager a feeding response as with shrimp or fish meat, but I don't remember them deflating.

Reefcentral got to upgrade their server. It is really getting bad to view and post right now.

I also notice that they don't seem to take clams or oysters too readily. I think scallop, being just the muscle tissue, should not be class as the same as feeding oysters or clams.
