Zaonthid lovers... Read this! Mods may move/edit but this is a service I think.

I believe it...I had something silmilar happen to me...the toxin shot in my eye. Talk about painfull...my eye was bloodshot and swollen for several days. I was told that I had I had seven visable chemical burns on my eye. Fortunately it went away after a weeks worth of antibaterial eye drops. That palytoxin is very wicked...I'm fortunate that I only got it in my eye and not my mouth.

I know the toxin can be hazardous but this person sounds like they went into anaphlactic shock, similiar to a person who gets stung by a bee and has a sever allergy to bee venom. He may have a specific allergy to the zoa toxin.

The toxin may have been extremely concentrated in the predator. The higher up the food chain, the more there is.

Very lucky to have had a strong heart, he was. Someone who already had a problem might not have survived the incident.

Doesnt sound like any type of shock was present...this was some other sort of reaction.
Palytoxin is in the family of botulinum toxin (botox). The most potent toxin on the planet. 1000X more toxic than the most potent man made toxin, dioxin (recently used to attempt an assassination on the Ukrainian pres, and you saw how messed up he was from it). Its more of a neurotoxin that causes paralysis (hence the eradication of wrinkles). The story is consistent with that given numbness and tingling without cardiac instability... The docs probably just observed, pumped you with fluids, and were ready if your diaphragm gave out, they would have thrown you on a ventilator (hence you going to the ICU). But luckily there was no shock, otherwise organ damage would be present...

Oh and i forgot, its also a severe vasoconstrictor also causing the rise on your blood pressure, and possibly contributing to the nubness and tingling in your hands/legs (reynauds sort of does the same thing). your kidneys are ok right? WHen do you see the doctor again?

?????

Thousands have suffered anaphlactic shock without organ damage, I've treated at least a few hundred in my career? Additionally, I'm sure he was treatd with epi then a course of either iv or PO sterioeds and not just "monitored." The reason I suggested that this is an exaggerated response in a specific individual, is because thousands have handled the toxin inappropriatly without such dramatic responses.

The person that this occured to is not reading this thread. The link above leads to theirs, so I doubt they'll be responding.

By chance, would "student" be med student? :)

For the same reason that as the words emit from our mouths "I do" our fathers are starring from a distance with the look on their face that suggests "WHY?"

I've never kept a zoa before (not on purpose at least).

During this new tank thing I'm going to go through, I think in addition to all Paly's, I'll add a blue ringed octo, a few foxface, a lion fish and a giant mantis shrimp oh and what the heck, an electric eel. Then I'll hand feed the tank twice a day.

:D

Oh wait....Then I'll post on RC when my right hand falls off and ask "WHY ME!??!?!"
