Shawn,
I use the zeo and am very happy with the results. I have had no issues with any algae in my tank since start up. I got a few strands of some algae on some frags and have to manually remove these few strands every week when I do my water change but it is literally a few strands I stay on top of. I have a few bubble algae pieces that came in on a coral and it takes months for them to return once they get big enough to pop off the rock, nothing to worry about. I have been running zeo since last year (I started as soon as I set up the new tank), June 05, so almost one year. I had a rough patch when flow through my zeo reactor was to fast. Once I got that and the alk dialed and stable everything is happy as can be. Color is great in a lot of corals, so-so in others. I have a lot of frags so I am waiting to see what happens in time as frags grow into colonies. Polyp extension is fantastic. My biggest enjoyment is watching the good colors, polyp extension, and no problems with algae of any kind.
I use a bunch of the supplements, basic 4, C-vitalizer, macro-elements, K-balance, pif, iron, pocci-stylo glow, spur 2 (for later in zeo stages). I defiantely think it is helping to keep my tank more naturally balanced...why this works with zeo, I couldn't tell you but it makes sense to me to run params near or at natural sea water. I have been able to do so and have great color and health of my corals. I only run 2 14k 250w DE lights over the system so growth is not super fast. I prefer the slower approach anyways, I don't want to grow out of my tank in 1-2 years so slow growth is favorable to me. I need to update my full tank shot on my website but it looks a lot different now than back in November. I think if you give it a year you will be happy with it. That was my committment, one year and then re-evaluate what I thought. So far I am very happy with it. There are many ways to achieve this balance in a tank. Zeo was the route I chose this time around, I am pleased thus far. I am not sure who is on the podcast but most of the zeo reps I know of are avid hobbyists and keep reef tanks.
