Zeovit

The appropriate dose is only one drop for every 25 gallons per week, so I don't think you can harm anything in the short term.

ill just do a drop of iodine each day when i dose the amino acids. its easier to remember. thanks for letting me know about the lugos

quick question before I am off to bed, I'll post my results/experiences after a month of sugar/AA dosing tomorrow night.

How well do corals do if/when transferred out of a ULNS? Are any measures taken when accliating new corals to an existing ULNS (ie, getting new frags).

Are any of you currently runnning frag growout tanks that are non ULN tanks? If so, what are your anecdotal experiences with frags going from the ULN display to a traditionally filtered/maintained prop system and/or vice versa?

Sorry JCT, I don't have an answer to your questions about ULNS transfers. I hope someone can share their experiences on that.

I look forward to seeing your opservations on suger/AA dosing.

I would guess they would respond like corals do when taken from the ocean.

This method attempts to replicate ocean waters around a reef.

But maybe im worng :)

Morning Zedar ...

I have a question or two about your dosing of potassium with iHerb Potassium Chloride.

1. What was your potassium level before you began dosing?

2. At what level do you like to maintain potassium, and how much Potassium Chloride did you have to dose to get it there?

Thanks in advance ....

Afternoon eskymick,

I dont have a test kit. Allot of people have questioned the accuracy of the kit. You can read the mixed results in this thread.

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=957770&highlight=KCL

I know its not the best way to do it but I kept adding two teaspoons every few hours till i used a bottle. I noticed an improvement in the health of the corals within a few days.

So what level am I at? I wish i knew. I havent seen any negative effects.

Potassium is suppose to help montiopora corals that are pale and grey. I have a pink monti that still hasnt improved after dosing a bottle of this stuff.

Im going to start dosing 2 teaspoons a day till my pink monti shows some improvements.

Dose in a high flow area and add it slowly. I burned a green slimer and a pavona coral by dosing to quickly directly in the tank.

Thanks Zedar ...

I did get the ZEOvit Potassium Test kit. I just took a reading and to the best of my poor eyesight, I came up with a reading of 250. That's very low.

Since we have about the same volume of water, I'll slowly add a bottle of Potassium Chloride and test again later in the week.

In reading a bit of the post that Zedar referred to, it looks like I'll be using nearly a bottle and a half (12 oz) of the iHerb Potassium Chloride powder to get my water up to the level of NSW (390).

I'll dose that over the course of 10 days.

I use Instant Ocean.

eskymick,

Zeovit advises you to add K+ strong @ 1ml every two hours till the level is at NSW

Quote

"Dosing K-Balance Strong:
Max. 1 ml per 25 gallons every 2 hours. We recommend to start with 0.5 ml per 25
gallons every 2 hours. Pay close attention to your K â€"œ level concentrations during that
time. You should stop dosing as soon as 380 mg can be measured. If you notice after
two weeks that the level has dropped again, start dosing again in lower amounts until
desired value is reached. Please DO NOT dose more than 1 ml per 25 gallons every two
hours.

WARNING: Only dose as recommended. This supplement is highly concentrated and
excessive dosing can lead to death (burning) of the growth tips."

I used this as a guide for dosing the KCL supplement.
In the course of a day i added the whole bottle. You may wish to be more careful
Looking forward to seeing the results..

Instead of the Iherb potassium I will be using the warner Potassium. I will let you know how that turns out in my tank. As fo me I am using the crystal sea mix but once that has run out I plan to go back to the seachem reef salt. still waiting for D&T to ship my stuff they had a few items on back order so when they come I will be good to go, but no rush letting the v/s/v ix do its thing first.

Ok as promised, Ive taken photos of the growth Im seeing.

These are not "before and afters" these are the befores :) Ive circled the new sprouts :)
I'll post in a week the "afters" with "hopefully" the same growth that ive seen in the last few days.

Remember this growth has occurred in just the last three days of my new dosing regime.

Excuse my lack of photography talent :)

You already have great color, Zedar. Just think how awesome they're gonna be when you squeeze a little bit more of the "brown" out along with intensified colors and more growth.

You're well on the way to a future TOTM.

Well, here is my experience thus far with C dosing...

First, background tank info...
26g bowfront dislpay
29g sump w/10 gal fuge in-sump
175w Hamilton14K MH in luminarc L3 large....
32w current dual actinic for dawn/dusk

Filtration is...
1- Octo DNW110 recirculating dkimmer pulling 8-10scfh, fed from overflow at aprox 125-150gph
1- modded CSS125 pulling 4-6scfh
3oz GAC changed monthly.
aprox 60#LR
1.5-2" sandbed in display
3" sandbed in fuge section of sump w/ Cheato and caleurpa MA
Ca/Alk is kept up by dosing 20 drops of AragaMilk to the top off RO/DI daily.

Coral stocking...most corals are still frags except where noted.
1 - Favites sp. brain (softball size)
1 - Acanthastre sp. (7 polyps)
1 - small Euphilya paranchora (2 heads)
1 - Caulastrea sp. (3 polyps)
1 - Echinophillya sp. (colony 3" x 6")
1 - small Echinophyllia sp.
2 - Montipora sp. frags
4 - (currently unspecified) Acropora sp. frags
1 - Acropora millepora
1 - Turbinaria renformis (2" across)
1 - Turbinaria peltetta (3" x 4")

Fish stocking...
1 - Sixline Wrasse (1.5")
1 - Speckled Hawkfish (2.5")
1 - Powder Brown Tang (4")

Before C dosing feeding schedule...
1 cube varied frozen per day :D

Current feeding schedule...
1 cube SFBB (SanFrancisco Bay Brand) Marine cuisine around 12:00 PM (dawn on reef time)
1 cube SFBB plankton around 5:00 PM
1 cube SFBB Omega-3 Brine, 1 cube SFBB Reef Plankton (small, under .5mm), 1 cube SFBB Plankton, 3drops Kent PhytoMax or ChromaPlex, 3-5ml 2LF Marine Snow....All at 12:30 AM (between dusk and night on reef tank).

C dosing/supplementing...
I started dosing 1 tsp/day granulated sugar about 5wks ago...had a bloom on day 3...cut back to 1/2 tsp/day and have stayed there since. Started dosing Mark Wiess Combo Vital from day 7. Started dosing Kent Coral-Accell at week 4. I'm currently waiting on ZEObac and ZEOspur2 from AS. Will start dosing bac as soon as it arrives. I'll wait to dose the spur until I see signs of a ULN enviroment (pastel corals)

Observations...
I had a slight diatom bloom right after the first bacterial bloom, but that cleared up on it's own in 3-4 days. I never had much HA (I think with all of the skimming, and MUCH smaller feedings before C dosing that the system was fairly nutrient poor to begin with). Still getting a slight film on the glass daily, but I just scrape it off and assume it's either being skimmed out or the corals are feeding off of it (similiar to the ZEOvit mulm). There is less diatom on the glass and LR (never a HUGE problem). MA still growing in fuge...but appears to be slowing in growth.

The corals that were initially fairly brown (ie, all Acropora sp.) are still fairly brown, but starting to show signs of color as well as a LITTLE "pasteling". All other coral coloration has stayed the same with the exception of the Favites sp. which is showing more grren in its's polyp centers, and the "brownish-red" polyp walls are turning more "reddish-purple" PE has been improving since week 1. Growth on all but Acropora sp seems to be faster. Acropora sp. growth is steady at .5"/mo ( I expect to see greater growth when ULN is achieved and frags become colonies that are able to "catch" more light)

I do not have ANY reliable test kits (I know...I'll be waiting on the flames for that  )...I've always just kind of guessed at water params. I will be investing in some good test kits in the near future.

Future plans...
I plan on adding Matrix in a seaclown that I'll be modifying to act as a HOT "ZEO" reactor.
I'm going to try increasing to 1 tsp/day of sugar over the next week. I MIGHT consider doing V/S/V dosing, but I'm leery of that (I'm a recovered alcoholic).

I'm stilll curious as to everyones experiences with moving corals into and out of a ULN system as I'm setting up a frag growout system and would like to be able to take frags from the ULN display to the prop system (which will NOT be a C dosed system for fear of corals not acclimating well in other peoples non-ULN systems)

Thanks to all in this thread and the MANY other ZEO and V/S dosing threads :D

In case you didn't notice...the one BIG change has been a HUGE increase in feedings. The fish seem healthier now :D
The skimmers have been pulling 3-4 times the skimate than before...I'm not sure if that's only because of the increase feedings or the feedings and the C dosing.

Are you talking about Lugol's? Do you happen to know how many mLs is in 1 drop?

Yes, I was talking about the recommended dose for Lugol's.

The conversion of the "number of drops per ml" is imprecise. But, it is generally agreed that there are approximately 18 - 20 drops per ml (using a standard eye dropper).
