Using the seachem reef salt - what alk would you shoot for using a standard alk test kit - to account for the borate

Thanks

Hey Zedar,
Thanks for the questions, I feel i am on the right track with the help from the guys at Zeo, and yes I think a lot of the problems come from the rock being full of nutrient. I you would have seen the tank this stuff came out of, you would understand. Of course I would have done things different, but I figured drying, bleaching and etc would work..

Anyway here are the answers to your question:
-I am strictly Zeo basic 4, actually no ZeoFood....
-Feeding was once a day, but I ended up getting a great deal on some anthias so the past week or so i have been feeding 3 times per week (No accelerated algae growth from what I see).
-Tanks is 11 months, some rock i have had for 2 years, most came from a friend that had a tank in bad repair.
-No DSB

Really, i figure it will take another couple months, but it does become frustrating after a while. But I do truly believe that tangs/rabbitfish are a key...

They wont hurt but will be a minor contributor to your success

Zedar,
Let me get this right as you mentioned on the other pages. You are running Matrixgravel/rock in place of the Zeo stones? That's why it got to costly for me on a big system.Being on Zeo rocks were changed out every six weeks.$$$$And you are using the same stones, for 8 months. Are you running them in a reactor, and pumping them like Zeo users do?You mentioned cleaning once a month. Is this the pumping method.
Ans with carbon dosing and a little Zeo products here and there. You are getting super results;) Wow that's pretty cool,as for not breaking the bank.
Just trying to found out as much as I can about using the Matrix stuff.Sounds very interesting:eek2:

Correct, I'm running matrix for the last 8 months with a monthly cleaning.
I'm using an old phosban reactor which is small, so i dont have any space left in the reactor to pump the matrix to clean it. Instead, once a month I empty the matrix into some tank water during a water change and rinse them.
If I did have a larger reactor i would pump it a few times a week and save myself the trouble. A DIY is in order i just havent had the time :)

I dont know if my results are as good as a zeo system. But I have NO algae problems, healthy colorful corals and fat fish from heavy feedings. I'd have to say the tank is a success.

Let me add. The tank does require a monthly cleaning. I stated there is no algae. Thats not completely true. Algae grows in the overflow and any other plastic in the tank. Such as the lockline for the return and the powerheads. In the past Ive attempted to kill it off with more carbon dosing, but I found that the corals suffer from this approach. The plastic must contain some organics that the algae feeds on. Its not a big deal. I can live with it.

Otherwise there isnt a single strand of HA to be found. Remember this was a tank that was plagued with HA.

Zedar,
I'm guess you were dosing VSV before the Matrix was added. So when you put this on line on your system.Did you back off on your amount of carbon dosing,or keep it the same.I know we should all test as we go.It just seems starting in a system,it would seem to go slower with the VSV dosing at first.

For those interested in what matrix is and how it works this link has been posted:

http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/Matrix.html

I plan to add my reactor back on line once I move, as for now I am seeing some could results onow that my alk and ph have stabalized. Just started returning to the v/s/v dosing to control the algae that returned. Dosing about .5ml and going slow, really slow this time. As for Zeo supps if you go with this determined method I know the AA's Coral Snow, and CV are good as well as the Sponge power. My corals have great PE after a dose of Snow and CV mix. Still striving for the popping colors. Zedar is that bright well Koralcolor working for you>? May give that a wing when I go to my LFS soon.

No i started dosing VSV at the same time I added the matrix.

On a side note here.As for this bacteria we are trying to get in the main system goes.I think someone posted here that it can even collect to your panes.
Here is my question I'm looking at.Us folks that run filter socks in our sump.I do this to protect 2 of my main pumps.A few years ago,a snail got in there and burned the pump up.So I learned my less on that. But with these filters bags,I'm sure it would attact in these bags also.I'm sure some will get threw the bags. But I also don't want to defeat the purpose also,as a huge collection station either. Are you running bags on your system. And how much of and impact comes into play here.I thought about this, wondering is this really a big deal?I run 2 bags of each on 2 drains. It's a shallow sump.It helps with the micro bubbles.

Hi Reefflections,
I think that general consensus in the Zeovit world is that filter socks/bags are fine, and in most cases recommended to help filter out some of the detritus and such. However, you do need to make sure that you are properly cleaning them on a regular interval, normally between 1-3 days. Some will argue, but many time when people are having issues, this is what is suggested.

Myself, I have 4 filters that I rotate. However I just ordered 25 more from Caribbean filters

How much ur pump flow rate feed in Matrix reactor?

I dont use a pump. I taped off the drain of my tank.

Ill guess about 200 gph

Ive never run filter socks. I would take Husky's advice

A bump for this thread here.Has anybody have anymore input here lately. As for trying this Matrix media. If so what where your results? It's been a good thread here.Would like to hear more from others.
