1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Thanks for the heads up on Catalina water- they can deliver Tuesday. I'm about to do it unless you guys tell me otherwise.....480 bucks for 1000 gallons.

I'm making ro water but Catalina will be much faster....

We used Catalina Water Company for many years as do many of the LFS's around So. Cal. They have decent water. Interestingly enough, it's pumped right out of Long Beach Harbor behind their building in the marina. As scary as that sounds, they do have a very good filtration & purification system to insure the water quality is good.

I've been down to their facility on more than one occasion. In fact, I got a large pieces of live rock from them around 15 years ago back when I needed one a few feet long for a bridge in my tank. They had purchased a barge full of live rock and transported it from the bahamas if memory serves me. None the less, the generators went down on the barge and the live rock didn't fare well and most of it was dead by the time it arrived at their facility. They had it in these huge bins that were around 20" by 4" across and a few feed deep. I remember digging through those bins for my prize piece which is still in my tank today.

Since we haven't had much rain in the local mountains, the salinity should be around 1.025 but I'd double check it. I've seen their salinity as low as 1.021'ish in large part because of where the water is pumped out and where fresh water enters that area of Long Beach Harbor from the LA Wash or whatever wash dumps into the harbor. Anyhow, if you can get and are impatient, the price per gallon isn't bad and is about wholesale cost on it. Like I said, the water quality is good and would certainly be a decent option to get your system filled and running.

Here we go. Spent the whole morning laying out the rocks. Well, not me, actually. I actually sat on the couch drinking coffee and barking orders and watching college football while my fish guys did the dirty work.

To put things in perspective, the guy in the tank is about 6'2"

Picking out rock...

Lets start stacking

I had 480 pounds or real reef rock - thought Id have plenty left over- 8 60 pound boxes. We used virtually every last bit

Things starting to come together.

Really starting to look nice:

The aftermath of whats left over:

The finished piece. The goal was to cover the center overflow and then have a couple of islands on either side

That looks spectacular. Those guys did a fantastic job scaping the tank. I love the bridges.

will post the schematic soon. Its nothing revolutionary- just figured out how I want to run my water change station.

As with the rest of this build I can imagine it will be epic.

Wow, is that a bulk discount price? Costs about twice that per gallon at the LFS and you don't get it delivered.

Looks like my photobucket account is getting hit hard. I'll see about upgrading my bandwidth.

Regardless, next step is to install the lights- 6 Radions going in this week. Have a bunch of projects around the house so not sure I'm going to get to it today. Also- water comes Tuesday. Anyone have experience with the ecotech reeflink? Looking at this instead of apex. Not sure- need to read more

Quick question- it appears you can program you ecotech radions by just setting up their eco smart web account and don't need anything else. Correct? No need for apex or reef link? I don't want to deal with apex right now. Just want to get the tank up and running first and automate later

I get their financial model but I've reduced the resolution of the photos significantly and according to them I'm using 2% of my capacity.

Yea I can't see any of those pics it says you need to expand your bandwith.

BTW, yes you dont need the apex for radions, but it is so easy to set up and saves you so much time and anxiety, not to mention likely all of your livestock once or twice. The light aspect is the least important part. With the amount of money uve invested, I think it would be a HUGE mistake to fire it up without that installed. A lot of things can go wrong in the beginning.
