Curious, do you see many smaller life forms in your tank, mysid shrimp, various pods, etc..

I see the occasional bristle worm at night, if I used a light I would see a pod here and there, but I haven't seen a pod in forever. I'm wondering if they are still there, or if my population is mostly wiped out.

My clean up crew is pretty much toast, I had a big Astraea die off this fall, and I almost never see any of the hermits I put in there initially.

Think it's time to replenish the snails, shrimps and crabs.

Hippo was doing great, they are alot sturdier and friendlier compared to the caught ones..Put him in the QT and he started eating right away..
Unfortunately , when my pipes froze the other week I had to go buy RODI for topoff, I also filled two of my jugs at work that morning for the dogs..

Either the LFS filled with city water and forgot to treat them with prime or I mixed the jugs up..
Either way I put 2 1/2 gallons chlorinated water in the hippo tank(40g) ,5 gallons in my 125 , and about 2 gallons in the 75 that has my panther grouper and niger trigger (Temp QT, getting ready to move), this happened over 2 days..

I lost my copperband butterfly in the 125, hippo tang, eibli mimic tang, lawnmower blenny and 1 peppermint shrimp in the 40, the grouper and the Niger Trigger were just sitting on the sand not moving much.
Did large water changes on all after dosing an emergency dose of prime, grouper and Niger Trigger back to normal, havent lost anyone else..

Going to hold off till I move to get any more fish, but I will be getting another tank bred Hippo after moving..

The pic of the male and female Personatus is stunning. I think more so because I've watched them grow up in this thread. Unbelievable job. I have skipped a few pages though. Do you still have 2 females?

yeah, they are still pretty fish but they have changed over the years and are not nearly as vibrant as they once were, imo.

Hmm interesting. Sadly haven't been around long enough to know, but yea they are sure good looking.

In your pics of the GP, is that another one possibly changing to male, I see some yellow.

Matt,

Lots of pods and hermits. No bristles, and I think my huge cleaner shrimp was picked off by the r. trigger.

I saw an emerald crab a few months back and will have to check for them late on night.

I don't see either of the other 2 female going male at this point. I thought just after I added them to the dt, one female was trying but luckily it did not happen. The three seem pretty content now and he seems to finally be comfy in the dt, lol, after 8 months.

you have any meds in the tank when this happened? prime becomes super deadly when mixed with any ammonia binding agent. just a thought. sorry for the losses.

I kind of assume I have pods, I just don't see them very often or not at all lately.

How do you quarantine your hermits, snails, shrimp, etc, just do tank transfer?

it seems as though the candies that have been around the last 5 years or so, just don't have the same beauty they had years earlier.

Perhaps they are simply captured in a different region now, compared to years ago. I doesn't have to be a huge distance to result in a morphological change, especially a minor one such as brightness of color (versus pattern change).

Yeah, tt for the most part, lol, although i often just leave them in the 20 gal for several weeks. I don't add snails though.

that was something we kicked around, but the collectors dont report any changes in location... kicked around collection techs, shipping, depth, water temps/conds etc. A bit of a bummer as they have def lost some of their magic, still stunning fish, but not as sharp.

Hope all is well.

Curious, why no snails?

I find hermits to be smarter. They, shrimp too, learn to venture out at night or to keep their backs to the wall, ime, snails don't. as a result, hermits and shrimp survive considerably longer in an aggressive environment.
