130 X 36 x 36 inbound...any suggestions?

hey kids...I had to rush out of town as a very close family friend lost their 21 year old daughter in a tragic accident...a friend was watching the fish...said the pep was not eating for him...she was doing fine when I left...will know more later...

hey, I hate to report this but I lost her, did not expect this...she was lifeless when I got here...tank sitter she just wasn't eating these last few days...I hadn't seen her since sat am and ts said she didn't she her eating or grazing the last few days...I wish she was alive when I got home so I could at least have tried...I feel like I failed this fish...sorry...I will do better next game...

The first post kinda puts the second into perpective.

You did the right thing going to see your friend.

Ted - I am truly sorry for the loss of your friends daughter. I can't even imagine what they are going through. My thoughts are with you all.

I am also very sorry about the P. boylei. The good news out of her is that you got to own and spend time with a fish that 99% of the world will never see! Animals live for a short time, but their photos live forever...with these little Paracentyropyge I always get larger specimen due to their VERY delicate nature. They literally need to be fed all day long.

We live and learn...you did everything right, sometimes the cards are not in our control...

Hey buddy, sorry to hear both these bits of news. Clearly the loss of your friends daughter is extremely tragic - having kids it's any parents worst nightmare. Kudos to you for doing the right thing - they'll appreciate your presence forever. If there's any good to come out your pep experience it's you've been a part of the process that so few have had - having helped educate others so all can learn from it and hopefully future specimens will increasingly do better in acclimation and captivity. Now go get two more...

Ugggggggggg. Im upset. F f f. Oknted. Right back on the horse. But next time maybe live rock setbup and not sterile pvc bare bottom. Maybe. Just thesis. Ok. Ted let be in touch. Btw my pep isngood but i dont love way narcosis is acting.

thanks...
good luck with yours and please keep me posted...
the qt is mature as it was a dt for about 10 years before a qt- I just removed the lr/ls..so, not sterile, plenty to graze on, including the pvc, which has worked well for all other fish and she was, I did put in a few pieces of lr from the dt fuge and she grazed on that too...she just never got to that point where she was actively swimming and grazing and picking like a fish, esp an angel, should be doing...
will wait until the next batch and try again...there may be some additional help getting the fish ready with the next batches...that could be huge...

Thanks...I feel the same way and would do it all over again, family is far more important...
Appreciate the kind words...

Thanks Chris...
It was a great 65 hours...they are simply stunning fish and while the red is intense and the white stripes cool and the combo is beautiful, what struck me the most was the intense yellow in her eyes and also on her pecs...they are very elegant fish...
knew that feeding schedule and was ready for it...I used the same for all my baby trigs and the baby angels I have...she just didn't have the appetite, unless they are eating something down there that were are not offering...
hope I can do better the next time...

would be great to find out what they are feeding them at waikki or Blueharbor, or what Rufus feeds them.

wild planktons ?

Hey all, so thanks for the kind words...

Thought I would share more sad news...
I have heard that def. 1 and possibly a second Pep has passed away exactly the same way mine did...
a total bummer...
lol, now I feel even worse...
very, very sad...
on deck for another, if that happens, and there may be additional assistance getting the fish ready for us in the future which is huge...
of the 5 that were shipped to the us...2 are def. gone and possibly a 3rd...

they were eating, just not enough...koji is here this weekend, going to try and compare notes but I have asked, he sells them quickly, and has lost some, so, I am not really sure of their survival rate...
mine picked at lrf, spir brine, was fascinated by live brine and pods, and picked on the back glass...she just had no interest...

Karen was involved with this batch and can hopefully shed light on what she does and what the Waikiki Aquarium is doing...

Hey Ted, I'm so sorry to hear of your losses this weekend. It's sad that this is all a part of life.
You are one of the best fish keepers out there and don't you forget that!

Karen

Thank you Karen, I appreciate it

What were they eating?
What are they feeding the pep at the aquarium?

Would you like the body to study?

Heard a 2nd pep was lost a few hours ago in just about the exact fashion as mine, heard possible a 3rd but have no confirmation at this point....

Ted, thank you for sharing your information with us in the midst of your loss so that we may learn from your experiences in hope that one day we will be fortunate enough to own such a spectacular fish. You guys are truly pioneers in our hobby.

I'm sorry to hear the news of more peppermints not making it. I'm glad you'll be able to talk with Koji and I hope we can learn more from him.

I am involved in this batch in that Rufus asked me to babysit the two peppermints that were not shipped. I've been putting them through my regular quarantine protocol in bare tanks with pvc to hide in and dim lighting.
Because they are a bit timid when I'm watching them I haven't watched much when I feed. I had offered what I saw posted that Koji fed which was newly hatched brine shrimp and I also offered cyclopese and tiny pieces of other frozen foods. They seemed interested but didn't seem to recognize the items as food. One of the fish started eating the brine shrimp over the weekend and that fish now seems more comfortable in it's environment and is eating fish ovaries and frozen Hikari mysid shrimp. I still have not seen the other fish eat.

I don't think the Waikiki Aquarium has any peppermints from this batch and I don't recall them having any trouble feeding the peppermint from the previous batch which is on exhibit now but I will ask what they fed it when they first got it.

Catching up with these amazing stories about the angels and I only wish the posts stopped back on page 76. Life is precious and while it has been noted over and over, Ted my heartfelt condolences go out to you and the the girl's family.

So sorry about the little angel as well.

Sorry to hear of the news, Ted. Just out of curiosity, was the tank sitter someone in the hobby or just a family friend that knows nothing about fish. It probably doesn't matter much but I was curious.

it seems they are still hanging in Paka's tank...i wonder whether the big journey to US mainland is wearing them out quickly....
from the collection they are going to at least 3 changes in relatively quick succession...first the hold-up tank in the boat(i guess 4-7 days),then rufus's own facility(15-30 days),finally customer's tank or LFS's tank....may be they are too delicate to handle this and many are falling.....
