I make my own food all the time. It's great stuff. I use a mixture of raw sashimi grade fish, prawns, mysid, cyclopeeze, squid, and other ingredients that I have on hand.

What do you use to blend?

I just use a small food processor and chop it up and add a bit of rodi water.

I probably make 2-3 months worth at a time. Just make sure you use a freezer approved ziplock bag and it should be fine. I've been doing this for the past 10 years so I know it works well.

I really should give it a try. Just been so lazy to go to the market :p

Speaking of food, you inspired me to do a nog shot, Sang :D

Man, you don't need a new skimmer. It looks great as is. Does it have a Eheim pump?

how do you package the home made food? do you put it into ice cube trays to get some "cube" like shapes and then chop it up?

Nah, I just throw it in a 1 gallon zip lock bag and freeze it flat. After it freezes, I take a hammer and break it up into small chunks.

There a lot of things in this hobby we don't need :) I've been hanging out too much in threads with all these nice skimmers :D
I have the bug! I just have to try it out now.

I did buy the upgraded Eheim pump. It's the one they use on their RC series.

mtome - thanks! :)

What consistency do you chop it into? do you add any selcon, garlic, or other vitamins?

I chop it pretty small. I suppose if you have larger fish, you could leave larger chunks. Selcon is a good idea, however, I don't like the oil slick it leaves behind.

Cyano update

Cyano update

While I wait for my new RODI filters to come in, I've done 2 20-gallon water changes. I'll do another 5 or 10 gallon change tonight. I also threw some carbon into a bag and placed it into my sump's baffle.

Hey Chris. I did a water change tonight, but took a turkey baster to the cyano first. I caught a lot of it in my filter socks.

I have thought about the lights out approach, but I'd like to wait until I get my new RODI filters in first and see if that improves things before I do lights out. My hunch is that the old filters are causing this bloom.

Good to hear that you can blow it into filter socks, that's a big advantage to catch the smaller particles as well.

I hope that the new filters for the Ro/Di works out. I know how big a headache cyano can be

hey tbone,

i did an RO/DI filter change and man, everything is just great. im guessing my RO/DI water had phosphates because all the turf algae are slowly browning out and dying.

oh and nice avatar. it makes me really really hungry.=(

Nice avatar T. Good grill mark defintion too. You should have a signature that says "Stick a fork in me." Just a thought...
