180G Waterfall Tank Build

Havent subscribed to a thread in a long time but this one will be worth the tag.

Very excited. The aggressive/passive fish idea is great. Roak on the waterfall is a greta idea as well. Rock does not have to be in the water to look good. Rock piles around the overflows and returns in the middles will be sweet.

Cant wait to see the rock work and lighting. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the great comments! I will be painting the light rack today and trying to figure out the cabling so I can hang it. Zoos are scheduled to be transfered tomorrow. :)

Nice find and work! If you are painting this yourself, look into Hammerite paint. When you are done, it looks like powdercoating.

But when you paint with it, the first two coats will be very light coats, or it fish eye's too much.

But I build these things, and use that paint too and it hold up awesome to all conditions!

Thanks for the tips, I think I will use the hammerite paint. I'm not sure what the wall thickness is on this but its pretty thin. I think total with lights it may end up weighing 35lbs or so. Cool Rail you got there!

Also. You could have used some .065 1x1 tubing there also, looks like some .120....might save you some weight. And for hanging this, you can go to home depot or lowes and get some cabling and eye bolts for a couple of studs in your sealing.
I think it will turn out great though :D

^ Thanks for the tips, I think I will use the Hammerite paint. Not sure what the wall thickness is on the steel but its fairly thin. I think with the lights and reflectors mounted it will only weigh about 35lbs or so. Neat rail by the way!

On the idea of separating the tanks into passive/agressive units, wouldn't there be some concern of the agressive fish noticing the "prey" in the tank above, and then they jump over? I know something like a lionfish would be too slow to make the leap, but I could easily see a panther grouper saying, "Mmmm, lunch!" and doing a salmon dive into the next tank. Has anyone ever tried that concept out before?

(by the way, I love the idea... just worried about the ultimate results!)

I'm not really putting any aggresive fish in either tank.
Top gets

i agree with jnarowe, haha. I can't wait to see it finished. i have seen many of these tanks in fishstores but never in a house. where did you get it?

I have wanted one of those Petco tanks for years. Congrats on scoring that one, I had visions of SPS and clams on one side and softies and maybe mangroves on the bottom...looking forward to more pics

edwing206: No, I may have confused you. I bought a tank through craigslist, but not one of these two tier ones. I would have if I had seen one though! :D

dude, that is going to be so cool! Less talk, more work!! :D

I think the problem with getting this done is too much work (at work) and not enough talk here about how to finish it up!

What size are the tang in gallons?

From what I read earlier, I think he's going to throw a few 10 gallon tangs in there. :D

Only kidding!

I believe I read it was a 180 gallon tank, right?
