180G Waterfall Tank Build

The negative edge tank or clam tank is in Ohau. Thanks for all the great comments! I hope to move the first tank into the bottom half this week (zoos and LPS). I will take plenty of pictures. I get my steel tomorrow (I hope) Then I will weld up the light rack and paint the reflectors and powdercoat the rack. Hopefully that will all be done by the end of Sunday.

I was manager of a Petco when I was in college and I always wanted to rip out the plants in one of those tanks and do a reef in one. Very cool can't wait to see how it turns out.

What a find. I don't even have room in my house for a 55 gallon, but I'd definitely make room for that! Can't wait to see how it turns out. I'll definitely be stopping by petco/petsmart tomorrow to try and talk them out of any of their extra tanks. Does anyone know where they purchase their tanks? I'm really intrigued. The whole tank is such an awesome concept, and with a reef? That's awesome!

I'll definitely be following this one.

Well, I did a little research. They also have a 3-tier aquarium like the one this thread is about. Looks pretty cool. The sad thing is... it appears you have to be a business to order the fixtures from them. Easy to work around, I suppose. Here's a link to their 3d aquarium fixtures...

you could own any kind of business i would think to order from them.. just say your using as a display in your office or anything really.. i think you could work around that easily but i bet you could build one yourself for alot less!!

Things have been moving slower than I had planned, doesnt that always happen! I got all my thin wall steel from a friend and reefer and cut it all a few nights ago. I worked for a few hours welding and grinding last night and I will finish that up tomorrow night. I think I will just primer and paint it myself instead of going with the podwercoating. I dont think it will make a difference and it will take a lot less time and money. Here are some pictures of all the cuts and an idea what it will look like.

I'm not sure they would hold the weight.

I doubt that they will hold the weight. Each bell is held to the mounting brackets by two 1/4 inch screws, and they are probably plated brass. I'd go with something burlier, and make sure it ties into your ceiling rafters....

Wow, very cool! i think it would be cool to have one where the bottom tank is a look down clam tank, and the taller tank is a reef...

Here is the light rack all welded up. Now if it would stop raining I could paint it!

very nice evo. I am really impressed with recycling this into a reef system. With that shallow of a tank(s) you could grow some really cool clams and other items and maybe enough for resale.

Nice find and work! If you are painting this yourself, look into Hammerite paint. When you are done, it looks like powdercoating.

But when you paint with it, the first two coats will be very light coats, or it fish eye's too much.

But I build these things, and use that paint too and it hold up awesome to all conditions!

Also. You could have used some .065 1x1 tubing there also, looks like some .120....might save you some weight. And for hanging this, you can go to home depot or lowes and get some cabling and eye bolts for a couple of studs in your sealing.
I think it will turn out great though :D
