I would definitely use another type of pump for the closed loop. Mag drives are not built to be used externally for saltwater. I would use an iwaki. They are very nice pumps and will last forever. Eheims are awesome, too.

will eheim work externally

you can get them to work externally either by using tubing or by getting metric conversion parts. They are amazing pumps - very quiet and not nearly as hot as a mag drive.

Eheim=quiet one

That's just not true from what I've heard of quiet one pumps. Quiet Ones are very unreliable. I only have experience with eheims but I have heard many stories of quiet one pumps crapping out quite quickly. Also, contrary to their name, quiet one pumps are not very quiet.

eheim pumps are great external pumps. The fittings are metric, so I use a lot of plumbers tape to fit american fittings to them. As LNell said, Eheim is not the same as Quiet One. I have used Quiet One pump before and I never had a single problem with it, but I have heard of others that have. I am currently running an eheim 1262 on a closed loop and a 1250 as the return on my 30 gallon cube. I also use a Tunze 6025 for extra circulation. I like having the Tunze in there because if I ever do maintenance, or am cleaning pumps, I can leave the Tunze on and have plenty of circulation.

That is quite a bit of light for a 30 gallon tank. I am using a 250 HQI MH on my tank and between that and my pumps, and skimmer I have to use a good sized fan to keep heat down. I have a 30 gallon cube with a 10 gallon sump (that holds about 8 gallons when operating), so one light perfectly covers the 20" x 20" size. Obviously your layout is different with the longer, skinnier tank, but I think with the extra light you will really need a chiller to help with heat.
