225 reef build

Thanks a bunch for posting pics of your stand. I am buying a similar sized tank from a guy and no stand. The LFS quoted me at $799 for a nice Oceanic stand; way more than I am willing to pay. I was drawing up plans today and threw them away when I saw your pics. Would you mind giving a quick rundown of the sizes you use; it's hard to tell from the pictures.

Old salty- the frame is 2x6 with 2x4 cross bracing, 3/4" Oak top & inside floor, skin is 1/4" Birch wood & the trim is 1x3 Oak. All joints are glued & screwed. The design is overkill im sure but most store bought stands are weak in my opinion. Let me know if I can help further.

Finally some updates

Used steel knee braces to stiffen things up

Still have to mount lights & some touch up, sanding, stain & paint the inside...also missing a door on the backside, lost a set of hinges some how.

Looks great, I don't know if I missed it earlier, but is the top going to stay open? I imagine it will be to tall to see over anyways, so you could let the heat rise out. I hope my new canopy turns out that nice.

Thanks, the top will be left open & will be at 6'-6" when on the stand. Im going to wait & see how bad the light reflection on my room ceiling will be, if real bad I'll do something different.

How tall is your canopy? I mean how many inches from the top of the tank? I dont know why I didnt think of leaving the top open. Very smart! I hope you dont mind me stealing some of your design. :)

Im going to leave the top open for now but we will see how it goes after 3 250w pendants & VHO actinics are on. thats a sliding light rack for the pendants.

Got bored at work & built this stainless pan for the bottom of the stand to catch any minor leaks or spills.

I really like your stand and hood and I'm sure that I won't be the only one to copy your idea. I searched a lot of threads looking for something really nice. Thanks for helping me to decide.

Looking forward to the rest of the thread.

Great Job on the stand! I was looking into getting a tank very similuar to yours and im working with GC too!

Looks very nice. Thanks for the extra pics of the stand. Once the temps start to fall, I will begin construction. Way too hot to be locked inside a garage in this weather.

cioutlaw - like your construction

noticed you have a metal pan for @ the bottom. Did you weld that yourself? Thought it might a good idea for the accidental pill.

Do you intend to have a drain on the pan just in case?
