240 Gallon Cube Tank Photo Diary

Glad to hear my design is working for you.
The horizontal trim boards went between the columns, not the full length of the stand.
When I built my columns, I left a 2x4 exposed on each side that I could nail my vertical 1x3 pine trim to.
If you go back to my original thread of building my stand, you can see a good pic of the trim and columns being started.
The 1x6 pine trim covered my 2x4 horizontal supports well. But, you will have to go with 1x8's, (which are actually only 3/4" x 7 1/2" in true size), to cover your 2x6's. Yes, your opening will be slightly smaller than mine, if you built it to the same height, because you went with 2x6's as horizontal supports.

Ok i think thats makes sense.

i actrually built my about 3" taller that yours to accomodate the extra height of the 2x6s....

it worked really well and i would like to say thanks again!

Next weekend i will get it all finished.... well hopefully...

i think i getw hat you are saying,

so you nailed the 1x3s to the last 2x4 right?

then you stopped the 1x6s (in my case 1x8s) right at the 1x3s and then built the columns right up to the 1x3s correct? or did you leave room inbetween the 1x3s and the column?

do you happen to have a pic of one of the corners of the columns and how you joined it to the stand? i mean i would like to see the crown molding and how it meets at the column and the stand....

i am trying to figure it out in my head how to do it, but am drawing a blank... so if you could snap a quick picture of that it would be great!

also how you attached your doors if you do not mind....

one more thing for you....

should i go with pine also?

i am staining my i think an oak color.....

woudl pine work?

thanks again!

Nick

also should i seal the 2x4s and 2x6 frame before i do anything else? or should i just seal it all at once? like after i stain it and all?

thanks!

Nick

You should seal the inside and out side of the stand when you have the wood work completed and a coat of stain on it. Stain, seal, putty the holes, sand it lightly, then laquer it.

Thanks, what do you think about the above questions?

and is it important to putty the holes?

so i shoudl seal it then putty the holes first?

thanks again!

Nick

Nick, I can't take any pics of the corner columns that would help you out. The stand is finished and all the woodwork is now hidden. Go back through my 'stand build' thread and do your best to look at the columns design and fabrication. Its too complicated to explain it all.
The columns were built first, then the 1x3s and 1x6s were cut to fit in between the columns.
Yes, it is very important to putty all the holes after you seal it. You'll need to lightly sand the exposed trim after you seal it because sealer raises the wood grain and makes the surface feel rough.
Yes, seal first then putty.
Doors are attached with hidden hinges. You can buy them at Lowes or Home Depot.
You can use any wood and any stain that you like. But know that all woods stain up differently. Look at the samples at your local hardware store to see how each particular wood type colors up for each stain and simply pick the one that you like best.
If you're using pine, definately use the premium or 'A' grade pine. The cheaper pine doesn't look as good, isn't cut to as exacting specifications and will more likely warp over time.
Good luck.
Lastly, from now on, please send me a PM with your stand build questions. This thread has kind of been hijacked by all your stand questions. I'm more than happy to try and answer them, but I don't think all the others are that interested in them. Also, remember, I'm not an expert, I just built a nice stand using what skills I have. If you need more technical info you your end, contact a local trim carpenter or visit a wood working store near you.
Thanks
Thanks

Sean whats the url for your stand building thread? I can't seem to find it but the search here is down for me.

Thanks. I'm getting ready to start building a stand for the little cube I got from Scott, 24x24x24, it equates out to be 58.84 gallons or so and I need something nice looking :)

Man I like that stand (the tank too). I cant wait to see it in person. We'll have to swap a few frags when yours grow out more.

Its well worth the wait to see it, I can tell you that.

Sean I was right behind you today at Midwest Reefs, you left 20-30 min before I got there. Had to visit a client down in NKC. Picked up a few nice peices.

Sorry I missed you. I picked up a few nice ones myself. What a selection eh? Amazing stuff. If only I didn't have these darn lights to pay off, I'd have brought home several more!
Steve is great a guy.

Oh yeah, he would bend over backward for you. And the good thing is, its a 8-10 minute drive to his place from here so he is very very close.

And as far as selection goes, wow, once my Sunlight Supply dual 400w ballast and pendants come in, I'm gonna stock up even more and pickup a few clams from him, he had some pretty ones today.

It is always funny, I come there expecting to spend an hour tops there but we end up talking and I spend 2-4 hours there and don't even realize it.

Sorry if I missed it but.. did you stick w/ the tank jets or get rid of them? How are/were they? Looks like you've got locline now.

What corals are the regal nipping? Obviously LPS would be doomed. Sweet fish though. Watanabe too :)

Nope, didn't go with the jacuzzi tank jets. They weren't long enough to go through the 1" acrylic. I went with standard 1" bulkheads with 3/4" loc line adapters so I can direct the flow.
Angels aren't nipping at any corals ;)

Thanks and good to know. Glad you mentioned 1" acrylic (what I have:) ).

Wonder if much flow is lost there reducing to 3/4.

Thought angels nipped at LPS. Good deal. They are beautiful.
