240 Gallon Cube Tank Photo Diary

:) I'll start another thread when the new tank begins construction. I've gotten the price quotes for the 72"x72"x30" and the 96"x 48"x 30". I thought I had committed myself to the 96" but the 72" square is about $800 cheaper. Its time for a decision

One thing to think about as well is aquascaping and reach. With the 72" square tank there will be about 24"X24" in the middle that will be very hard/impossible to reach.

Im surprised there is that much difference in price. Oh well.

Dont worry about not being able to make up your mind. Im in the process of making my mind up on my next tank and just cant decide on what Im going to do. Ive changed my mind on tank dimensions alone probably 15 times in the past year.

I like the shelf idea. I would definitely incorporate a granite or Corian type top so that if/when it gets messed up from you standing on it, you can sand it down and it will look like new. Id also go with 12 inches or so so you can stand on it.

hi, where are all photos of this amazing tank ?
I see in place of most of the pictures message from photobucket that picture was deleted.:(

I've posted some new pics, but not in this thread. Below is a video of my reef I posted a short while ago. Not much has changed since the video except I've taken out the Imperator, the yellow tangs, and the Chevron. I've added a Red Sea Regal, hybrid angel, female bellus angel, and a gorgeous Asfur angel.
I am in the planning stages of replacing this cube with another much larger tank. We are discussing the possibility of building another home or staying put. If we stay here, I'll be getting a 120"x36"x36" tank. If we move, I'm seriously considering a 96"x96"x32" cubish tank centered in a game room. Either way, a big tank is on the way!
Here's the video:

Good video. I'd seen it before, but it was nice to see it again. I can't believe you're already upgrading. ;)

Can you explain a little more why you removed those fish? Were they being problematic or were you just worried about them bothering the new additions? Ive only tried yellows a few times but hated them every time. I'll never try them again. They are full of themselves IMO.

Beautiful video by the way! It REALLY shows the dynamics of the aquascaping better than a still picture.

I hope you get the new house. I wanna see that 8' x 8' cube! :D

Hi Reefwaters- You got it right. I moved out those fish to make room for the new additions. I also have a small black tang comming soon and thats the main reason for moving out the other tangs. This black tang is only about 3" so I didn't want any other tangs in there that could cause any problems. I've been waiting 4 years for this fish and I won't take any chances with him :)
The imperator was also causing some problems with my male Watanabe angel and I feared he might eventually cause some damage or chase the Watanabe out of the tank, so he had to go.
I sure would like to set up the 8'x8' as well. I can't imagine a more fun, and rewarding project, than that. The possibilities are definately vast with a tank like that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, although I really do like my current home. I spent a full year building it and we have a spectacular view of a large valley and two horse ranches down below us, so leaving that will be a tough decision.
We'll just have to wait and see. I won't move unless I can replace or improve upon the view ;)
Thanks for the compliments too.

I thought i have too many fish in my cube. Beautiful aquascape, bet you have lots of room to mount corals.
Here's my current fish list:
Small/medium Asfur angel
Small Red Sea Regal angel
Small Majestic angel
Small female Bellus angel
Pair of Watanabe angels
Yellow hybrid angel
Small flame angel
Mystery wrasse
Helfrichi firefish
Mated pair of black percs
Pair of orange percs (soon to be moved out)
3 chromis (soon to be moved out)

I agree with you that the number of fish I had that were in the video was perhaps a bit much for the tank, but I think the current load is fine. Once I get rid of the chromis and orange percs, I think the 12 remaining fish will be a good load. I've got a great skimmer and water change every two weeks.

it was my understanding that angels are not really reef safe.. but you have mostly angels.. how are they in a reef tank, do you have invertibrates?

I just want to say that even though you are planning on moving out of that cube tank, I find that tank to be a huge inspiration. When I first started visiting RC I found this thread and was just blown away by your tank photos. I would love to do a 240 cube someday now and I never thought that is the direction I would want to go, Thanks for your inspiration and good luck with the bigger tank. I can't wait to see it!

Hi Gabriel!
I have been 'somewhat' careful with the angels that I have picked. The ones that I have are 'supposed' to be safe with SPS corals and most soft corals. So far, I have not had any problems with any of them. I don't have any zoanthids, as I'm sure the angels would feast on them. I do have quite abit of Red Sea pulsing xenia that they don't bother either.
I do have one large crocea clam, a large pink brain, and a few other LSP corals now and the angels do not appear to be bothering them. I do keep them well fed and have a constant supply of Nori in the tank which they all love!
Maybe I'm just dodging the inevitable bullet, but to me these fish are worth the risk. I'm finding that I am enjoying the fish much more than the corals lately. To me, the corals are now really just an attractive back drop to the fish.
We'll see what happens down the road, but so far, the fish aren't any problem.
I do have a passion for angels... of all kinds...."Charlie's", "Victoria Secret's", and of course fish ;)

Great video! I love those corner pillars
Thank you very much! 'The Twins' as I call them are great for creating a 'trench' look from the front and also a great vertical aspect from the sides. They also hide my four, floor mounted, closed loop returns well.

Thank you very much for that compliment! I'm not sure I deserve it but its nice to know that the tank is well received and of interest to others. Its nice to see so many other 240 cubes coming about and I'm glad to think that maybe my tank has something to do with that 'out of the 'rectangle'' thinking ;) when it comes to aquaria.
Its a great shape and size, but since I can't seem to control myself with it comes to corals and fish, I have found this size to be limiting. So, there comes the need to go bigger. I'm very much hoping I can proceed with the 8'x8' design. It will be very similar in design to the 4'x4' but with an off center overflow and maybe Tunze instead of a closed loop.
Thanks again everyone for bringing this tread back to life. I've been somewhat quiet lately with other things on my plate, but its nice to see the interest in the cube still there.
