he wasnt talking about you, was another derrik thread that got locked. this will be his 4th thread 2 of which have been locked. and ryan those threads got locked because the OP raged when people dared to question him.

Please, nobody get offended by what I said. To each their own and their own opinion. What I'm tyring to say is, what one person has work for them might not work for others. Not everyone is going to take your ( once again towards no one particular) advice. Some are in this for their own personal enjoyment, regardless of animal happiness or wellness. Some, I include myself in this, are in it for their own little slice of the ocean and try to make it the best beach front property they can. Healthy, THRIVING, and successful long term. Any one can go buy a tang every other month, but it takes work and diligence to buy one tang and keep it alive. I am more worried about that noob jumping onto a build thread and the OP getting pounded for his choices and feeling that is how this forum works.
Nehemeth this was, or my last post, in no way towards you, just a general observation I have made in the coarse of a couple threads by the OP.

Rayn if you go back and look you will see it was the OPs posts which were removed. It is only a matter of time...before we see another incredible reef!

Ok guys another quick update so i went to creation reef and aqautics here in woodstock ga. They have a state of the art Water testing system. It cost $5 just to get your water tested through it. Its computerized and examines everything!!!! I mean everything!!!! I got my top off water tested and my tank water tested. My top off water salinity was at 1.022 tank water 1.023. I informed them of my fish happy tank so quick this time. Anfd first of all let me admit on my old 180 that was mostly taken care of by a good friend of the family. I paid for tank the equipment and everything but he told me what to purchase and what to do. I ahve taken some of his tricks he learned me with that tank and my others and yea i have done it my own way. The reason I ignore advice and move my own way is because I have had success that way. I havent had a fish loss in years no joke. Also about my DIY rock some of my pieces arent porous becuase i made them that way. most of my porous pieces ended up breakign so tehy were smaller than what i wanted so the bigger pieces I made them non porus and they stuck together alot better i didnt add salt when i made those bigger pieces. Like i said im not hear for controversy. Im not here to argue. i keep saying all i want is piece then 30 minutes later i check my pc and see yet another rude or obviously sarcastic remark. Its ok cuz like i said i will not worry about that nor respond to it. So with that i say this thanks guys for all the help so let me say im not asking for help anymore!!!!!! Ideas yes I would love those give me opinions if i like it ill use it sorta like when brandon said take the sokc out bye bye sock on my way for sponges soon. I wont respond to anyones rude comments any longer and i really mean it this time. I said some nasty things in my last few threads and were closed for them that was my mistake and if anyone was offended sorry but i wont be doing that anymore. I am moving on with my tank and if you wanna follow by all means do so. I want people to see you can move quicker with your tank not hurt your fish and keep great water quality. If you wanna see that and and see it can happen then continuen to read this thread and you will see magic. I really have to get ready to add more light I have my halides coming here on thursday im buying fiji live rock from my LFS everytime i get a chance now my goal is to have about 300 lbs of live rock. I want a tank full of softies love the look and cant wait to see my finish product. Thanks everyone for their post im on page 4 on day 3 thats great =) Ill have pics in the morning of the tank i am due for a water change ill do one before so you guys can see it running clear before the change during me changing it and after the change =)

I didn't say anything about the sock, I believe that was Palting.

So your top-off water is at 1.022 and your tank is at 1.023 correct? You said you top-off once a week. About how much do you top-off? Any particular reason you are topping off with water that has a salinity of 1.022?

Sorry Brandon I meant Palting my bad buddy and uh honestly i add about 2 gallons once a week to top off just enough so that the return pump isnt pushing air bubbles into the tank. and then I do weekly water changes about 15 gallons. Honestly i havent had a high salinity problem ever i dont know why???? I never thought adding fresh was a good idea but hey maybe i will start doing that and saving some moey lol But I swear My salinty is never high nor low its about right everytime

derrik that level of salinity is pretty low for reefs. .025-.026 is ideal. you go much lower then where you are at you risk melting your coral.

that said i would suggest getting your salinity up to those numbers and then only topping off with fresh ro/di water. 1 time a week seems awfully little, how much are you topping off? inmy 55 i go through 5-8 gals a week topping off daily, this helps to keep your params stable rather then having them swing one way then drastically the other when you do a top off.

ps. the space bar and enter button is your friend.

Pics tommorow guys I promise Ill have pics of water levels even though i know strips arent the most accurate I take pics of water before the change during the change and after the change. No salinity problem and no fish loss everyone is still accounted for and very happy

+1 I almost use a gallon a day too.

Would you mind giving us a list of all the parameters from your water test? This would be a good place to log results to see how the tank is progressing.

I'm all for people doing things their own way, especially when it works in the end. If he's not specifically asking for advice don't ram any down his throat and everything will be peachy...LOL

Heck, my build is titled 'How not to build...' I never claimed to have a clue what I was doing and it usually works in the end. Wasn't that many years ago that people dipped coral skeletons in bleach and threw pennies in the tank to control ick...

Ok cuz yea Matt at my LFS said I should raise a little bit so guess i will add salt. Maybe thats why my colt coral keeps sprouting and shrinking every couple of hours?????

naa mine does that as well. the level of salinity you are at is good for a fish only tank. you may want to check into a differant brand of salt. most will what salinity it will be at when used right. IE 1 cub per 5gals will bring it to .025

i guess we were asking for the test from the samples you took to the lfs

I was asking for the test sample from that fancy, $5 computerized test. If you could post that, awesome. Didn't they give you a printout?

Make sure to add that salt to the sump so it mixes a little before it hits the Display. If you pour it right into the display it may touch the fish before it dissolves and burn their flesh.

I tried to help on the first couple of threads, but for this one, I will do everything I can to bite my tongue.

For the sake of your livestock, I wish you the best.

Same here, but...

Here's the issue I take. It's not that someone new might stumble onto this thread and think Man, these people are mean, I'm scared to post a question...no, it's far worse than that. I'm more concerned that someone new to the hobby will stumble onto this thread and thing Man, that seems so much easier than the other advice I've got, I'm going to do it that way.

My top off water salinity was at 1.022 tank water 1.023.

There's been a lot of things in this thread, and your previous threads that have been pretty hotly debated. DIY live rock, snake oil cycling chemicals, etc...but this is not debatable.

Fact-water evaporates.

Fact-salt does not.

Fact-topping off with saltwater will raise your salinity.

So unless you're saying you top off with saltwater, but you mean something different, something isn't adding up here.
