250 gallon build thread

Ok, just placed a massive order with premiumaquatics.com . With the primary objectives being lighting upgrade and a focus on making water changes easier, here is what I ordered. 3ea of a Rio 3100 pump. This is a good pump that pushes just under 1000gph for a decent price. They are UL rated also. One pump will go in the sump and will be plumbed into a drain. One will go in the fresh RO reservoir and will be plumbed to the sump and one will go into the salt reservoir and will be plumbed to the sump. The three pumps will be plugged into a dj light controller power panel, and the switches will be labeled, "sump to drain", "RO Topoff", Saltwater to Sump". This will allow me to do all my water changes and topoffs via a switch board. I will still have control over the whole process, but now heavy lifting or getting wet! :) All I will need after the pumps is the power panel and the plumbing.

For the lighting, this will be a massive upgrade. I wanted brilliant color in an energy efficient package. I have the light rack done, and all the lumenarcs in place. The mh bulbs will all be switch over to XM 20k. All three ballasts will be switched out with Lumatek's newest 250 watt dimmable ballasts. I will be adding 4 T5 bulbs via retrofit with individual parabolic reflectors for actinic supplementation. I went with Geisemann Powerchrome 420nm bulbs, because I love the old school VHO purple color, and this bulb supposedly nails it. Once I install it, I will be raising the rack from 6" off the tank to 12" off the tank and decreasing the photo period. The new lumateks will be far brighter than my old magnetic ballasts, so that will allow me to improve my spread some. Plus I can use the actinics for early and late viewing. The improved lighting should help me with a minor algae problem I have been experiencing lately. Not to mention, it should make me want to add more color to the tank, which means more coral. LOL.

Finally, for the frag tank I just ordered a 36" dual bulb T5 fixture to get some light over it since the old PC light shot craps.

Also, one minor tweek I will be making on the filtration side of things. My cousin "oneoffcustom" is graciously giving me two Nextreef MR1 shorty reactors, so I will be running carbon and GFO full time. I am looking for more clarity in the water, and although my Salifert phosphate kit gives me a reading of 0 ppm, I am not convinced because of the recent algae bloom. I figure between GFO and new bulbs with increased actinic supplementation, I should be able to rid the tank of microalgae.

State tuned for pictures! My shipment comes in Tuesday.

I realize my thread does not see a whole lot of action, because in most cases (at least I think) I have everything figured out. I do not ask for opinions enough. So here it goes. This is something I have been wrestling with lately and would like to hear your thoughts.

When I setup the tank I thought I wanted this big wall of rock in the tank. If you have followed the thread you know I put pvc rock racks to make it look like I have much more rock then I actually do. This greatly reduced the swimming column on the viewing side of the tank, but actually provided a lot of hidden swimming space that the fish utilize. The fish love it, but less viewing for me. Also they spend more time swimming under the rocks. Lately I have seen a lot of tanks on RC that have more of a minimalistic look, with smaller amounts of rock in the display and more in the sump. I have been debating going with less rock in the display and removing the racks. I think it would look nicer and provide more visible swimming from the fish. I would also try to keep some hiding spots for fish health. Maybe only remove one of the racks? What are your thoughts?

my opinion is: i agree with your opinion.
leave one rack in to keep the fish happy:fish2: and take one rack out to keep you happy:), then go from there

you could do a few piles like i did.....room to hide, room for coral. If you remove to much then your stuck with no room for coral and a basic fowlr tank.....jmo i have rock up against the overflows with caves for them to roam but far more open area through out the middle and in front of the rocks...... nice choice of lighting by the way. I have been running actinic an hour and a half before and after the MH lights come on ... i guess thats my idea of sun up and sun down....very nice thread keep it coming...... i guess the next chapter might be how to remove part of a rock wall with out a nitrate spike?

Wow, upgrades abound. Did you end up getting the JBJ ATO? Your lighting upgrade and rack is very nice. I think you'll like the G-Mann Actinic. It has good color similar to VHO, though not quite as much "pop" IMO. I run dawn/dusk two hours before and after in case your wondering.

My opinion on the rock-scape: If you like the low-pro look, just remove the racks. Done and done. :D As long as your careful when you re-stack the rock, you should be able to maintain plenty of spaces for fish to hide/sleep.

I am really torn on the rock, I wont have a spike because I wont actually remove any biological filtration, just the rack that hold the rock up. Only issue, I have lots of coral growing to large rocks, especially my red cap, which would have to be destroyed to do this project, I may not do it at all. The very top of my tank has about 5 massive pcs of rock. I could just throw them in the sump, but they are colored very nicely and that would only open the top of the water. In my case, my fish seem to prefer swiming lower in the tank.

Didnt get the ATO yet. I still may. Another thing I am torn about. ATO is a dangerous game, but JBJ seems to be pretty safe, as long as it kicks off. But it is electronic, and can malfunction. Murphy's Law would probably apply.

I sent Nook a PM asking him to move this thread to the SLASH forum so I can get more local influence, however, I am pretty sure he ignores my PMs, then he ignores me when I ask if he got my PMs. Not sure what is up. Oh well.

Just got 4 packages from PA. I will unbox all of them when I get home. I will photo-document of course! Stay tuned!

Don't worry, my thread doesn't see much action in the SLASH forums and all I do is ask for opinions. ;-) I'm also planning a ATO, but I plan to constrain it some. I plan on keeping the RO reserve with only enough water to cause a small flood, hopefully not kill livestock if something goes wrong. What's a JBJ ATO?

Using my EE background, I'd say this is pretty fancy for what you need. At least the controller part is. The float switch is always going to be the weakest link. I was looking at the one on autotopoff.com but I'm also considering building my own.

What is EE? JBJ ATO kicks off if it runs for 4 minutes. Not too fancy for me. Still trying to figure out what too fancy for me exactly means..... LOL.

EE is Electrical Engineering. I didn't realize it had a timer to shut off the pump. I guess it has some nice safety features to justify the extra cost. My fault for skimming the description.

There is no such thing as a "failsafe" ato, even with extra floats for redundancy. JBJ is the closest you will get to failsafe. If anyone finds anything better, please post. But I do not know that I will even go for ato. I may stick with manual since it will be so easy with the switches.

JBJ is the closest you will get to failsafe. If anyone finds anything better, please post.

Not a chance. JBJ is simply the most expensive budget top off system... I gave mine away just last week (malfunctioned). The Tunze "Osmo-TopOff-O-Lator" or LiterMeter3 are far closer to failsafe, and undeniably superior products, though this is also reflected in price, unfortunately.

And while almost nothing in life is failsafe, I personally think that ATO systems, in general, are worth the inherent risk due to the amount of stability and convenience they lend to our systems.

It looks like I may need some help with the lighting system. Going to wait until I get all the ballast. Could be an weekend afternoon job. This weekend is booked up for me already! :( Drats, may have to wait until next week.

Anyone got a DJ light controller laying around they want to sell?

Ok, lighting upgrade is done and semi-auto water change is in place.

And I know what you want..... pics. Here is the best I could do with my peice of crap Nikon Coolpix.
