27 clowns in the same tank 27 months~Thread of the Month

Thanks Flighty,
I cleaned the Tunze and the Magnifica was blowing back and forth but the length of the tentacles have remained unchanged, so I dunno...
Thanks for the input and food suggestions.

How are the clowns getting along after so much time together?

Thanks, here is a picture from today. Very little fighting. This gal on the right side kinda randomly chase whoever is in front of her but no biting or contact:

Here is a group shot:

The pair on the left are looking more mature. Not sure if their coloring is has changed much because of their host:

I feed silversides but you were speaking to flighty about not feeding silversides. .......wondering why.

Thanks for the question. I have read other posts where anemones have died for no apparent reason except possibly bad silversides. So I just chose not to take the chance.

Thanks folks for the comments.

I'm surprised they tolerate the chromis. My clowns hate my chromis.

That's interesting. I see absolutely no interaction between the clowns and chromis'. The worse bully is my baby Blue Hippo Tang who is bothering my new Lawnmower Blenny and the Mandarin pair. What's up with that?

My clowns are laying eggs though. Maybe that's the difference. My Blue Hippo doesn't bother anything. Sometimes my female clown will chase it across the tank but other than that its quite peaceful.

hmm im surprised to...my clowns hate my chromis with no passion at all lol. but then again mine are also spawning so im not sure if that makes a difference or not. nice looking tank regardless. can we get an updated FTS? i love the look of the sea of red and green BTAs. what happened with the gold one?

isseym328--Please proceed with caution. You must start with juvenile clowns. Size alone does not guarantee age. I started with a clutch that were born together and raised together. I don't know what the magic number is for clowns but anything under 7 is IMO dangerous. Three is certain death for one.

First of all you have a wonderful tank! I love the idea of all those clowns together. Really really nice!!! You know every time you make a statement like "certain death" that at least one person is going to pop up and say "not all the time." I actually have a ocellaris trio. I had a mature female and I added two juveniles that were about 4 months old. One of the juveniles became her mate and the other has remained a juvenile. The pair have eggs every nine days. The juvenile stays very close to the pair although he is not allowed TOO close unless the female has left the eggs to eat or something. In that case I have seen the juvenile tending the eggs with the male. In the same tank I have a pair of pink skunks. I was toying with the idea of another pair of a different type for the other side of the tank, but I am pretty maxed out for fish. Once again, great tank!

I have been playing with the idea of keeping two pairs in my 125g. One occel. and a pair of black percs/ ovvel, not sure which they were other than black. The current pair has bonded and host a double headed torch. I have been wondering if placing their home on one side and a home for the others on the far side of the tank will keep the peace. I've tried to keep the rock work open with many holes to dodge in and out of. I am gettign close to moving my current fish into the tank and finishing my stocking list. Do you guys think this will work?

BTW, I know you said you are collecting many different types of anenome. Did you see the flame tip that was for sale/trade? Also, have any fry survived being in the display tank? I gotta say your tank is SWEET!

QUESTION: Do you always have that much flow over your Anemones? They like it? (Obviously from your tank!)

The bta's probably would like less flow but they don't have any choice. :) The Mag probably would like that much flow. Maybe I'll switch the Tunze's around next time I clean them.

Ok, maybe it isn't always certain death to have more than one pair in a tank, it is better to have them in on opposite sides of the tank where they don't see each other. Sometimes clowns just don't know to stay on their side or some clowns like Clarkii will claim 2/3rds of a 240 gallon tank. Unless they respect their claimed areas, it could make for ugly fighting and bad karma.

I did see that flame tip! But, I have not seen my Gold tipped BTA for awhile now and I look for him every night. This is after I've had him for months in a different tank. :( So I don't plan on adding anymore BTA's.

In my experience, clown fry have absolutely no chance of surviving in the display tank. The overflow, skimmer, powerheads and bigger fish, etc will do them in by morning. On the other hand, I've had dozens of Banggai Cardinals survive....

Thanks for the questions, opinions and compliments. They are much appreciated.

Do you feed your anenomes? If so what do you feed them and how often?
[welcome]

The stickies at the top of this forum has very good information including:
http://www.carlosreef.com/AnemoneFAQ.pdf

I feed a variety of foods including Cyclopeze, Golden Pearls, Frozen Brine Shrimp, PE Frozen Mysis, Krill, Scallops, and Spectrum Pellets. Rarely, I feed fresh shrimp eggs, oysters, salmon, tuna, clams, squid, etc. I target feed maybe once or twice a week. Sometimes not at all for many weeks. I have three 400 watt halides and two 160W VHO for lights to feed the anemones also.

When you have many clowns growing up together, aggresion is not a problem. I currently have 26 juvies in a 50 gal. No nems though.

So basically the key to housing so many clowns together (of the same kind) is so get them when they are still young?

You probably mentioned this earlier but I missed it, what is your maintence on your tank? Im curious if you still need to watch alk/calcium with an anemone tank with lps???
