270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

You have done an amazing job with your tank! congrats!:celeb3:

Would you mind posting your fish list please? :fish1:

Ed really would enjoy a flame angel, how are they doing in your tank, are they nipping the sps?

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Ed Reef The green clown gobies are pretty new. I had lots in my old tank and did not have any problems, but time will tell with these. The yellow ones I know can cause problems.

Hi Julio, so far no breeding with the flame angles. I was trying to have four but one died right away. I have had them about 1.5 years now.

edandsandy I do see the flames nipping at the sps once in a while, but they're not really bothering the SPS. Corals are still growing and have good coloration. I'll post a list of the fish I have in a bit.

Some more pictures.

Joe....your old tank motivated me to move from FO to Reef tank. You inspire me to make my take better. Excellent work as usual.

Cheers!

Beautiful! Do you siphon your sand ever? What kind of water treatments do you use to keep nitrate and phosphate within normal limits?

You definitely have a green thumb....my tank is about one year behind yours and doesn't look half that good:( It looks like you have some sweet corals too!

I think all the adjectives have been used to describe your system, but I have to say, it is just beautiful!
Thank you so much for posting your fish list.

Again thanks for all the nice words!!

Jim, I am so glad I was able to inspire you to move to a reef tank, hopefully the change over was worth it!

Hi Dave, I do not siphon the sand. There is some cyano in some places, mostly in the corners, if you look carefully you can see some of it in the pictures. IMO cyano is always around in small amounts anyway, easier to just live with it if it is not too bad. That and I now keep a lot of fish in this tank so it is to be somewhat expected.

For water treatments, I use RO/DI, I try to do water changes of about 10% weekly, but seem to do it anywhere from one to three weeks. I use GFO and carbon, changed out monthly. Skim heavily. I also use nitrate reducer called Special Blend (http://www.microbelift.com/) weekly.

I played around a lot last year with Vodka dosing but not using it right now.

Hi Julio, I am using (3) 250-watt MH and (4) 80-watt T5's. MH are Aquaconnect 14K, and the T5 are Giesemann 1/2 Actinic Plus 1/2 Pure Actinic.

Very nice Joe. I always enjoy your updates. Your growth is amazing. I have always really liked the aquaconnects, I might need to switch things up again.

Joe,

What is the black rectangle on the back of the tank, above the rim? It's visible in the middle back, between the lights and top of the tank.

Hey Mark,

It's just a piece of black acrylic. It hides the plumbing from the return to the wavyseas that is in the back middle of the tank.
