270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

Update.

So I framed out the new wall and added a door to the sump room.
Framing was a pain, as the area has the HVAC vents going right above, so there was little to attach the studs to. But I was able to work it out.

Then I moved the light switch for the room, added an electrical outlet, and sheetrocked the whole thing. I ran out of the normal sheetrock so I ended up using one sheet of green board.

I have to tape and spackle tonight.

I'm putting in a window so you can view the room without opening the door. Also added an LCD screen cause I thought that would be cool. :D

The LCD readout. I will have it alternate, every 3 seconds, between the tank reading via my aquacontroller and the temp and humidity reading for inside the room. The status shows whether or not the aquacontroller is working properly, date and time is just the current time and date. I have it hooked into a motion sensor so it only turns on when someone is in the area.

Here are the two views. (I still have the plastic film on to protect it from scratches).

It took a while. Got distracted by the new Halo Beta for a day or so :D

Nice progress!!

You need to tell us more about the remote ACIII display. I want not one, but two!!

I'm pretty excited about that display. It has nothing to do with aquarium products. I bought the LCD from CrystalFontz

http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/634usb/index.html

And used the software for the LCD to read values I dump into a text file. The LCD software formats the text for me, and refreshes every 30 seconds or so. I also use a product called Homeseer, for home automation, so I was able to tie into some temp sensors I have hooked up to that. It's going to look very cool once I get the wall finished and the unit properly mounted in the wall. The only drawback is it needs to be hard wired into a computer via USB. But I have a laptop acting as a whole house server next to the sump room, so it's not a big deal.

Thanks for the link. It's bookmarked! :D The displays are nice and not expensive... Now, if only I could afford an extra laptop just for the tank. ;)

Joe, that is way cool!

Pierce, you don't need two, you need four (some for your friends :) )

Thanks guys. I figured I would show off some of the things I have planed for this setup t keep it interesting. I got a bunch more stuff that I'm planning on doing that should make this interesting (not that the tank itself won't be). :)

Yeah the LCD looks really cool in person. When I get the wall finished and have the thing properly mounted it's going to look high tech for sure.

BTW I don;t have a laptop setup dedicated to the tank. It's really a whole house server. I have all my music collection burned to files as well as all my dvd's. So it helps to server that up to the house as well as home automation, web server, ftp and VNC for when I am away from home. The benefit is that I can easily connect to the aquacontroller, and really take advantage of te home automation with the tank setup this time.

Joe, is your server in the fish room or you ran a long USB wire to it?

I want to put a display like that on my in-wall tank too.

You should get few from some of your job sites and mail them to Joe and I to play with;).

The laptop is right outside of the fish room. You can see it in one of the pictures above.

Since I had the wall open I ran the USB cable through the wall.

Don't I wish. I'm trying to figure out a way to have one of my controllers magically disappear and re-appear at my house.

Joe, so your using a Laptop as a server?

Yes the laptop is running windows server 2003. I am also running VMware so I have two other sessions of XP running too. A Laptop works well as a server, newer ones can get 4gb of RAM in them and the don't use much power.

very nice.... I was thinking about using a mac mini, running Parallels, or VMware, for my 120 eventually. Since they are soo small. We'll see. anyway sweet setup, oh and yeah the Halo 3 Beta is awesome... :D
