3 tank,2600 gal. system room build

very nice cabinet. i would like a better close up of the tank. from these pix you can't see any pipe work at all.

in my tank you can see some pipes around the top for the sump return and other pipes for the surges.

Reefski I have the OM 4way closed loop under tank with plumbing from the bottom tank, I'll have to download some pictures of the build

me too. we drilled out rocks that we put the returns inside.

what i don't like about the OM 4 ways is that the pumps are high electricity consumers.

that seems to be a good reason to go with in tank power heads. but then you seem them or at least cords most likely and the risk of electical leaks in the tank.

i have had Koralia's leak electricity.

Thats about the way I do all mine. Instead of using white pvc I used black pvc and you cant even tell where they are in my tanks even if your lookn at them sometimes.

carl have you looked at the red dragon pumps. very energy efficient.
I use a dart, like yourself i put rock and corals around my returns.

right now its 130x40x36high. internal overflow on 1 end with 5- 1 1/2'' holes in overflow. could you show me a diagram of your idea for flow in tank. no hood is planned right now and we wanted nothing across the top of the tank. tank bottom will be tempered. i like the idea of a gyre type flow,ie circular, with all pumps and drains going the same way, 30-50times turnover is impossible in this large of a tank. jnarowe does your tank have holes? if not how is your flow done? i know about thunze and vertec just not sure which way to go.

thank you. i have not looked at the Red Dragon pumps.

i currently have four Hammerheads each drawing about 250 watts. today i am connecting a fifth to run the surges. there are two on the closed loops, one on the sump return and one on the skimmer.

i have one additional for backup.

i have no money left to contemplate changing pumps and plumbing. my wife says we are done now. i have to agree.

reefski- in your thread you said early on you liked your closed loops and i thought later you said you would not do it the same way again. i need your imput on closed loop or not for my new tank.

have 3 fish in 200,minatus grouper, clown trigger and 3 foot tusalata eel. 50 gal water change every month.

 I was just teasing you... to-be-honest, I have never run a fish only SW system so I can't give much advice, but i don't think a moderate level of nitrates and phosphates will be too harmful. The best way to judge IMO is how the fish look themselves.

If the fish look vibrant, healthy, well colored etc, you are probably doing fine and just keeping up water changes will be good. If they look dull, frayed fins, discolored, then I would step up husbandry.

As far as the algae scrubber goes, I think they can be useful, but for a fish-only, I would probably lean toward a sulfur reactor just to have a more "controllable" reduction method.

All I am going to say about closed loops, since clearly most following this thread disagree, is that I would NEVER use one. I really like Paul @ OM and have a great respect for his ingenuity, but I don't like the overall concept of a closed loop if it includes penetrating the tank. My next tank will have ZERO penetrations.

If you want to discuss it more, we can talk or PM. :)

i am still liking the motion and all that. i just worry about the pipes clogging up with no way to ever clean them. and the elctricity cost.

i don't know if rubber O rings on the bulkheads ever wear out get brittle, etc.

i considered putting them on the top of the tank but didn't want to block the light. i like them coming up from the bottom. i would have set them about 6" lower in the tank. two of the eight are right above the sand bed.

i don't like the wires and powerheads in the tank look though.

my next tank will also be glass if i can get one that size. or maybe a hybrid like paul whitby has.

I know what you mean. After a while the pipes do get debris in them and even if you have it setup with removable sections to clean out he pipes you never get to it all. As for orings and such for bulkheads I do beleive they do dryout or get brittle with age and may leak in the future.

The one thing I pride myself on is being able to hide powerheads and such in my tanks cuz I am not a big fan of seeing them.
