32 Gallon Brute Trash Can Question

Does anyone have their 32 Gallon Brute Cans marked for where certain gallons of water would be at in them? I took some measurements and got right around 15.5 inches from the bottom would be 20 gallons. I put a mark there and filled up just slightly over with my RODI water. Added 1.6 lbs. of salt per gallon as instructed on the Red Sea Coral Pro salt directions and got a little over 1.030. Directions say it should be 1.025.

Looking for someone that has had success with the markings to say what height the marks are at for certain gallons.

Thanks!

Thanks, I was trying to avoid that! I was hoping someone already did that work for me. I guess I'll have to go buy a gallon of something and chug it down.

An easier way is to just fill it up, then measure how much salt it takes to bring it up to 1.025(or .024/.026) and then just add that much salt next time. My 55g barrel takes one full bag of IO plus two 12oz hit jars to hit 1.025 on the money.

25 gallons for me was just barely over the uppermost ridge in the trash can and I measured 20 gallons at about 15.5" down from the top, just got 2 of the 32 gallons on Friday and did those 2 measurements only.

Same thing here, I just fill the bucket and then measure the salinity as I add more salt to the optimum level. I have a heater and a powerhead in the brute agitating and bringing water to same temp as my tank the entire time too.

You don't need to constantly agitate the water, but make sure to agitate it for at least 24 hours before you change the water. I usually let mine run for 2 days before.

I do 25 gallon water changes and just above the upper ridge is exactly what I use for a mark.

Here's a way to know just exactly how much is in the Brute. I used a clear PCV and the marks you see are 5 gallons each. A little overkill I realize but it sure worked well.

+1. At the uppermost ridge, I mix up 13.5 cups of salt, and it usually get me close to 1.024 initially, then I usually only need to add a like another 1/2 a cup or so, to reach my target of 1.025.

Brilliant. A little OCD but brilliant.

I took a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe, put it in the barrel, then used a 1 gallon pitcher adding 1 pitcher at time, then marked the 1/2" PVC pipe at every 5 gallon increment.

Got the idea watching the truck driver that fills the storage tanks at the gas station ...

Your reading is not entirely accurate since temperature also plays a role in salinity. Especially if you are using freshly made RO water that is still cold from your incoming water temperature.
