5 Tangs in Quarantine

To put it in perspective for you I will soon be upgrading to a 200dd. I'm mainly going to have fairy wrasses and my only tangs will be a tomini and a vlamingy. The vlamingy will be my show fish in the tank and normally I'd say the tank will still be small for one but my rock work will be in the center of the tank. So it will have room to swim around the entire tank instead of just going side to side and turning around.

not sure what your point is??? is 5 tangs too many, but a Vlamingii tang is fine in a 200dd?

Which is not a good idea, especially with a Sohal,

He had an outbreak of ick last fall in the tang tank (no surprise, but he lost one), got it under control and he reports all fish are doing well. To each their own I guess....

*edit and update* so I just spoke to him and he said his sohal (now 11") runs the tank but is usually only aggressive with the others at feeding time. He also reports no slashing..just some butting and chasing

Yes but no. 5 tangs would probably be ok. It's been done before but you are really rolling the dice with the aggression. The less the better unless you are doing an enormous tank. The vlamingy really needs a 6' tank for swimming space but I'll be able to get by with a 4' tank due to the fact it can swim 360 degrees around the tank. A 4' tank with rock on the back wall wouldn't do it.

If you've ever seen a full grown vlamingii you would agree that 200g is nowhere near large enough. I've watched them in a 30ft x 15ft tank go end to end in a few seconds with a couple hard paddles. They are truly impressive fish.

i would not put a vlamingii in your tank. i'm more trying to understand the rational of advice from someone who advises against 5 tangs in a 300g, but puts a giant in a 200g? i've seen a vlamingii, in a large tank, that would be measured in feet and pounds, not ounces and inches.

I'm well aware of how large they get. My Lfs has one in a 36" cube that is over 5 years old and around 8" long. I should be able to house it for the better part of 8-10 years before he goes in a friends 900 gallon tank.

You are not well aware of their size and growth rate and your comment solidifies that fact.

At 5 years they should have been full grown for a couple years already. If it is only 8" long at that age its growth has been severely stunted and it will most likely live a much shorter life than it could have.

It will realistically outgrow your tank within the first year of its life.

You think it is ok to keep a fish that will get to at least 1/3 the entire length of the tank? Seriously? I mean, I guess we do it for humans too, but we call that prison cells.

I've had at least two tangs in a 20 long QT for 12 weeks. A powder blue and a tomini. I think I had a flame angel in the QT at the same time. The trick I found was to have strong water movement to give them some exercise.

Yeah, a 20g isn't ideal for a tang. It would definitely be unsuitable as a long term display tank. But you do what you have to do. QT is intended to be a temporary situation. I intentionally use a 20g because the potential price of medicating a larger tank, trying to catch the fish in a larger tank, and the physical space needed are all turn offs to me.

I had a 10 inch vlamingi in my tank, and a 9 inch hippo. In my opinion, I would never recommend anything smaller than a 6 ft tank. In fact, I often felt my 6 ft tank was too small. Too small for these two fish because of their size is what I mean. I had 7 tangs in my DT that got along great, and were fat and healthy.
