I will be installing the following in the fish room to vent the hot/humid air outside... I also have an air intake in the room so that the air will get drawn into the heating/cooling system as well...

where did you buy this setup and the exhaust fan? be sure to let us know how it works out for ya.also i would expect to lose around 6-10 gallons a day if you leave the top of the tank open.friend of mine just had to put thin sheets of acrylic over his openings to keep the evaporation down and the humidity.the humidity was getting overwhelming.im setting up my 500 in the next few months and thats one of my main concerns.i really like that setup you bought.

It's working well, I got it hooked up last nite and I could tell a diff in just a few hrs... I will have to get back with you on where I ordered the two pieces at... I don't think I would be able to cover my tank, also I don't want to run into any heat issues by covering the tank with acrylic...

i didnt think about the heat issues.i have the same size tank as you except it is only 25" high and i plan on putting down eggcrate and then thin sheets of acrylic on top of it 1. to keep the evaporation down and 2. to keep my eels in the tank(which you dont have that problem).but im thinking that elevating the acrylic as well as drilling small holes in it will keep a little air to be able to transfer in and out and keep from having any heat issues.

I was working on getting my IO salt up to NSW levels...

I did some testing on my system today and did the calculations and here they are...

Calcium
Current : 320ppm
Desired : 400ppm

Need almost 4.5 cups of Dowflakes...

Magnesium
Current : 1230ppm
Desired : 1400ppm

Need like 9 cups and Epsom salts and 15 cups of MAG Flakes...

Alkalinity
Current : 3.88meq/L / 10.8dKH
Desired : 4meg/L / 11dKH

Since Alk is so close I am not even going to worry about it...

I will be adding the Dow/MAG flakes and Epsom Salt over the next few days to being the levels up... Once I get them where I want them I will dial in the CA and Kalk reactor to hopefully keep up with the system and maybe "boosting" here and there when needed...

I will be boosting my water changes as well before they enter the tank...

I seem to be getting a Brown diatom algae bloom... I will be ordering some more snails tomorrow and have them Thur to keep up with the diatom, and my RD pump is in the mail and I should have that on Thur as well... I think I may need to cut back on my lighting at least for now as I have the MHs running for 7hrs and 15 min and the T5s are running for 11hrs...

I take it that the 200ish lbs of cure LR that is in the system is not enough to keep up with the bloom ??

just a cycle. let it run it's course.

I know its the cycle, but I figured since I was starting with a good amount of LR it skip the cycle, also I used RO/DI water... I think the avg rule is like 2lbs of LR for every gal, so I am about 1600lbs short :D

Well, it's rare to "skip" a cycle. And that avg. rule is rediculous. You "cured" the rock too right? That will knock down a lot of the natural bacteria and it will take time for it to re-develop. I put 750 lbs. of actual live rock into my system and still had a cycle. And occassionally diatoms will pop up even in mature systems. BTW, diatoms are great food for the reef! :)

Yea, I am not worried about the diatom... I just hope that I don't have to deal with the HA and all the other "bad" crap...

Unfortunately big tanks go through the same growing pains as small tanks. Big tanks are just harder to clean.

The extra water volume doesn't change anything, as it's relative to the bioload and bacterial colony.

Keep your eye on the diatoms as they can mask dinoflagellate algae. Some sand-sifters will keep the substrate clean, and a powerhead on a stick will blast it off of the rocks.

Higher form algae will develop shortly, hopefully not in the form of hair algae. Keeping the lights off or shortening the photoperiod works, but at the cost of losing some of your pro-biotics like coraline algae and photosynthetic invertebrates.

Is your macro algae growing well in your refugium? I normally wouldn't recommend an iron supplement, but since you don't have any blue/green micro algae yet, it would benefit the macro algae without feeding the fire.

I had the HA real bad but I attribute that to not having a skimmer running during the cycle. I do recommend a 1 hour "nap" in the middle of the photo-period. Algae are a lower plant form that takes quite a bit of time before it can ramp up photosynthesis. Higher plant forms will start to respirate rather quickly so they are not harmed by the nap. I have a 1 hour nap on my FW planted tank and it works great!

Great idea. I thought cyanobacteria, like briopsis and derbasia, reacted quicker to lighting cues than higher form (single celled) macro algae. I know that terrestrial plants only need a fraction of a second of darkness to trigger a dark photo-peroid, and subsequent cease in photosynthetic activity. Conversely, they take a while to ramp-up when the lights come back on. This would support your nap idea.

Do you have a link to any information about photosynthetic "on/off" switching in nuisance algae?

I don't have anything to link to but it is mentioned in a couple of my FW planted books. I know for a fact it works with HA. Couple daily naps with frequent water changes and your cycle will be easy as pie. :) I don't really know how quickly cyano reacts to light but I believe that creating a nap will break the food chain enough to battle a variety of nuisances. I don't use naps in my reef tank but I do have a couple of my lights on movers, so in reality my tank has micro-naps all day long.

Update...

Update...

For the past few days I have only been running my MHs (7hrs and 15min)... Once I get more snails and hermits in there (will be here today) to keep up with the diatom I will go back to my normal lighting sched (prob on Saturday)... I have already noticed that the reduced lighting has helped...

I got the drain hooked up on the utility sink today as well, I still need to get the copper ran for the hot and cold...

My RD pump has a status of "OUT FOR DELIVERY"...

Along with the snails and hermits I have a few "special" surprises that you all will have to wait to see :p I should have pics up later today or tomorrow...

Hi asnatlas!!

First congratulations for your awesome huge tank.

Can I see some pictures of your stand ??, becuase I wat to have an idea to do the stand of my new reef aquarium.

I assume you're not planning on putting that extremely expensive tang in that uncycled tank?! :eek1:

Anyway, tank is looking good. I like the huge footprint. It really gives you a lot of options for some creative aquascaping.
