Just got finished with the thread...With all the crap that went on, would it be at all possible for u to get a few people together and rent a uhaul? Or do you not want to rick that?

not worth the risk. asnatias will be very happy when he sees how much work it is. and im sure for $1,000 it will include insurance in case anything bad happens in the move.

I would solicit the help of local reefers. The idea of a skid to slide it down the stairs sounds wise, and I would make some type of rails on the final steps to keep it at knee or waist level. Heck, with a little money I would make a rolling platform to carry the brunt of the weight of the leading edge so that it could be navigated more easily from the steps forward. But that's me - Mr. Pragmatic.

I agree melev. By the time you spend all the money to cautiously bring the tank down, it still wouldn't cost anywhere near 1k.

So are you going to let them move it? Also, are they charging you for storage at the dock?

I told him I would be getting back with him, at this time I am waiting on someone to get back with me, also have one more company I can try... At this time no fee for having it stored...

Back at the end of August I already started a thead in the CORA fourm about helping me, Then when I called around and got a quote for less then 200.00 I couldn't pass that up... Well since the backout from All American Moving and the 1k price, I have been posting in that thread to see if I can get people to help, I would only do it if I am sure everyone, and everything would be OK...

Free Beer...

pay the grand, get it done right. why skimp now? why would you trust a few people that you met online to move your aquarium?

Ive been following this thread long enough to know that you really dont care about others opinions, you do what you want to do.. and thats fine but... you will be making the biggest mistake of your life if you attempt to move this tank with a few guys that you enticed with beer to help. seriously... pay the $1000 and not worry about it.

if that tank falls on someone, they will get seriously hurt. then $1000 will look like pennies.
be smart and do it right

It's not the money, I am not rich by any means, but Jeff prob thinks that he has me by the balls right now as he has been looking at my tank for almost 3wks while one company has already backed out on the move... If I would have went to him first I prob could have gotten it done for 500.00, but now that he has seen the one company back out and prob thinking that I am getting impatient that I will pay the 1k with out any questions... WRONG, I am not going to let someone take advantage of me and take my hard earned money... I am not going to skimp on this project; I am going to do what I did before and shop around... There are other moving companies around, Does not hurt to ask... If I can get more people involved and they all are telling me 1k, fine, if I get other companies saying that can move it for less then Jeff can match or I will let the other company move it...

I was just posting in the local CORA forum to see what people had to say about the move, The more info I have the better I can weight my options... Also they are not people that I met other the net, we have monthly meetings and cook outs all the time, not like I posted on a forum getting 10 guys I have never meet that wants free beer... They all live with in 20 miles of me, and more I have talked to face to face on many occasions...

I am open to others opinions, I respect everyoneââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s advice, They are seeing pics on the net, not seeing the project first hand, which I know from seeing things on the net and seeing it in person alot of times gives me a total different view depending on what it is... Also I am not going to change something just because one person says they would do it a diff way, there are many ways to get things done to come out with the same out come...

Thank you for your post, at this time I am not saying I am going with Custom Movers, nor going to try it myself with the local club members help... I am in no hurry, no need to rush; I have time to look around for other options...

I wonder if Jeff is just trying to charge you that much because he knows you have been screwed over and are desperate to get someone to move the tank in. I'm sorry but $100 per hour per guy is way too much. If I worked for that place and worked 40 hours a week for 52 weeks a year I would be grossing $208,000.

At least call every other moving/rigging company in the area and exhaust all your options. See if anyone will give you a better price and then see if Jeff will price match it. I still don't like the idea of having to move that tank in by "non-professionals" but it if it needs to be done it needs to be done. I know I would never even think about paying someone $1K to move that tank in. I'm sure you could devise some sort of device that will help get that tank down the stairs and into the basement for way less than $1K.

LOL, Travis, read above, I guess you were replying as I was typing my book ;)

Other then looking into other moving companies, I am also going to look into maybe setting this tank up on the first floor... I have a place it would fit... I need to look into reinforcement, it will not be easy with the finished basement, but maybe getting that done and the tank on the first story will be ALOT cheaper then getting it down the stairs... Also I am only 25 and I am not planning on this being my final house... Not planning on moving for 8-10yrs or so, but I would like to take the tank with me when I move, even if I do go with a bigger tank in the new house... So if it's going to cost me 1k to get it down, it will prob cost me 2k in 10yrs to get it up :( I can tell you now though, if it does make it into the basement and it would cost 2k to bring it up, it will be staying LOLââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦

Taken out of context, that still sounds about right.

I did have it installed in the house. True I never did the install all myself! But I did have a helping hand in every step of the build of the tank. $1,000 for moving the tank that is crazy! Shop around get a few more estimates.

I'm guessing you orginally planned on putting the tank in the basement for a reason. I wouldn't start changing plans just because you have encountered a "hiccup". But I do agree, IF you get that tank downstairs, it probably won't be coming back up. It could be a major selling point for your house if you decide to leave it. But the buyers may also want the tank out before buying the house. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that whoever buys my house will want the tank. Otherwise I have to move it upstairs and redo the whole wall.:( Heck, I don't even know how I would get my puny little 280 acrylic up the stairs.

Shawn,
after asking you somewhere els, i had to look at your thread and see your troubel, sorry to hear that, i know it must be hard to know your tank is there but you can't get it moved,

i hope you get it all worked out and at the end your tank will be safe on your stand,

i would ask club members and friends to move it, wheaterson used some kind of "moving equipment" you might be able to rent something like that, to assist the move,

if you dont know what i am talking about, it is on one of the first pages on Wheaterson's thread, with pictures,

I have one other company already looking into it and I have at least one more I can call, which I will be doing tomorrow...

I wanted it in the basement because my wife and I spend most of our time down there when we are home then on the first floor... Also I was thinking if I had it down on the concrete floor I wouldn't have to worry about reinforcement of anything... But after thinking about it I might be able to get the reinforcement done and tank moved into the house for less then 1k which would just be to get the tank down the stairs...

I would never have guessed it would be a grand to get it down into the basement :( Like I stated earlier I am looking to move at least once more in my life and would like the 600gal to come with me if at all possible which if it was on the first floor then it would be easier and cheaper... I am just trying to look at all of my options...

I remember seeing that piece of equ in his thread... That would not really work in my case as my main problem is getting the tank into the basement not on the stand...

And Heinz, its weatherson :)
