700g+ T5 & Sunlit Reef System

Hi

amazing set up

Can you explain me how you handle the photoperiod? at night how do you enjoy your tank?

extra light at night plus solatube the whole day isn't that much??

I live in Venezuela, really a sunny country all year around and I am seriously considering going the solatube way, but I would like to enjoy my tank at night.

may be this is a silly question

My tank is 96 long 30 wide and 36 inches deep, do you thinks the solatubes would work? may be a bigger diameter or more units

thanks anyway

regards

Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it.

Hi Claudio,

Where I live the tank is lit from around 6am to 6pm (Solatubes). Although it is really intense from 11:30am - 2:30pm. I use my T5 lighting from around 1pm - 8:30pm, so I can see it during the evenings for a few hours.

You'd be surprised how much light is in the tank; during our winter/autumn period I rely abit more on the T5's however the spring/summer really does kick in with 30-45 degree celsius days.

Some people say "What do you do on a cloudy or rainy day where your solatubes aren't that effective?"

My answer is, the reef has these cloudy days too! :lolspin:

Solatubes can work on any tank; I just think of SPS tanks you "may" need to supplement.

Thanks for your prompt reply,

Solatubes is a project I definitely will work on

besides solatube web page, did you gathered info from other sources in order to calculate how many units and diameter??

regards

Claudio

Hi Claudio,

I just worked around my tank build (Eg; bracing) I have two cross braces so that left me with 3 spots.

Here in Australia we have 250mm and 400mm units. I went with 250mm because it fitted in nicely with the 5' width of the tank and the T5 units.

Your tank is beautiful. I really like the "Brain Room" that you built with the stand. That's pretty creative.

How are the Emperor and Trigger doing with your SPS and LPS. Any nipping? Have they killed any corals?

I have a beautiful queen that I just couldn't pass up...I have yet to add any corals. I was hoping to have a mixed reef too. Similar to yours.

Great size to the tank. I currently have a 450 gallon reef tank, TWV is about 650 gallons.....and plan to upgrade to a peninsula tank similar to yours in the future. The anthias schools are really nice in a set-up like that. Is humidity an issue in Australia?
Thanks and I will continue to follow!!

Gorgeous! I am especially drawn to setups with high volume and not too much rock. I always thought fish looked so much happier swimming in that open water :-) Also, applause for making your own fish room! What you don't have, build! +10!!!

I do have a question for you too....how is the noise level? Did you have any trouble finding ways to reduce noise or were you lucky enough to have a quiet system from the get go? Folks with seperate rooms and plumbed basements have the luxury of being as noisy as they want, but I was curious of how you can keep such an impressive system down to a dull roar!

The Blue Throat hasn't touched anything as well as the Emperor. Many folks say that I may encounter issues with the Emp as he reaches full adult colouration but time will tell.

I don't have any LPS only SPS so this helps somewhat I imagine.

Humidity in Queensland where I live is pretty bad during summer reaching 70-90% somedays, however the house is fully air conditioned and because the water volume is large it never really is a problem.

I am always happy to hear when other reefers come around and say how quiet the tank is.

When you purchase high quality equipment they generally are pretty quiet. My noisiest bit of equipment is probably the vortechs or ozone when it is on.

Hey buddy good job with the entire design, everything appears to be well thought out. This is definitely one of the cleanest builds I've ever seen.

I just got some news that my last fish is ready for collection. Unfortunately I am interestate and can't pick it up for a week or so though.

It is a Tennenti Tang aka Lieutenant Tang @ approx 8 inches.
