75 g build Ogden it

Alright well everything is sanded down and first layer of poly has been laid down

So we're on our way once again !!!
Also I took some measurements of the tank , it's 48x18x24 LxWxH so it's a 90 gallon for sure !!

I'm actually kind of ****ed cuz I got looking at the tank today and realized there are some possible gnarly scratches in this thing !! And I'm gonna be super bummed if they won't buff out with cerium oxide ,, if they don't I guess I'll just have to install low iron glass =\ ,, I mean it's great and all but it sets me back that much more !! Patients patients right !?!

Looks really great. I love the stain color you're using. I have a 75 set up with very similar finish. I am looking for to following you progress.
Steve

Thanks steve ! I like the color too,, other then a couple of newbie mistakes I think it's gonna turn out really good !!! Thanks fish !! I'll keep you guys posted !! I've got the tank flipped upside down to help support the canopy so I can't reach my hand in to feel if I can land a fingernail inside the scratches !! But I'll definately keep you guys posted !! So stain and polyurethane newbie mistake #1 make sure everything is completely dry !! So being this my third time laying down stain on this thing I got just a hair inpatient and when I went to lay down the polyurethane it lifted some of the stain that hadn't soaked in completely !!
Mistake #2 don't use foam brushes from harbor freight !! Use the ones from homedepot ,, mistake #3 clean all of your surfaces !! And keep them clean ! And DO NOT , repeat do not dip your brush in the stain can ,, pour it into another container and dip from there !! Lessons learned !! I spray painted my first reef tank stand and my freshwater 125 ,, so this is my first experience with 2 part stain and poly !! Hopes this helps someone !! Will keep y'all posted

So you use stain , then after it has dried you put 3 coats of polyurethane top coat on it ! To protect it , they make an all in one stain that is nice but the two part looks better I think

If your planning on keeping the tanks right there I would move that outlet. At the very least I would change it to a GFCI.

Fish great thinkin !!! So it is required by the IRC (international residential building code) that unfished rooms that have outlets shall be protect by gfci,, AND in a mechanical room your required to put at least 1 GFCI close to the furnace (for servicing ) so I'll have to go check it with my checker, it's possible it's on a gfci circuit , and the reset is just over on the other wall !!! Thanks fish,, geez don't I feel stupid,, I'm even a building a building inspector for the city and I forgot to check that,, tunnel vision I guess =\

Not sure but when you replaced that bottom piece of wood on the stand, did you buy marine grade plywood? It will resist mold and rot from the water.

If not I would at the very least silicone the corners and paint the inside with some nice epoxy paint(rustolium makes an appliance epoxy paint that works well) so spills are a breeze to cleanup and will not soak into the wood. On second thought I would silicone and paint the interior anyways even if you used marine grade plywood.

Looking good so far.

No I used melimine (that white laminated wood you use for shelves) I found a double sided sheet at Home Depot so the bottom is laminated and inside the stand is laminated , and I will be using silicone just for extra precaution ,, I was rushing and didn't take pictures of the bottom install =\

Not stain, but actual paint! Epoxy paint is whats preferred. Just make sure you give it a few days to dry and off gas.

Stain will not block water from entering the wood, and since you used melamine, any water will make it literally fall apart.

Melamine is basically sawdust glued together to make a board, and typically coated with vinyl sheets to protect the used sides. If water enters the unsealed sides, it swells and falls apart. It's great stuff, and strong as h*ll if it's kept dry.

It's your thread, reply all you want.

Unlike some people, I read back to the last post I read. Not just the topic or last post in a thread.
