It can take up to three months to fully cycle base rock. As long as you have a good per centage of live rock to base rock your tank will still cycle and you will be able to add a cuc and coral
I would be very cautious however in adding bigger bioloads such as fish
It is possible for the corraline to come back--make sure you run your lights 3 hours a day while cycling

So instead of the normal 4-6 week cycle... my cycle is going to be 12 weeks?

I also took the live rock out of my tank for a while when I was working on drilling, zip tying etc.... this wouldn't have effected it too badly did it?

Very nice setup so far! I can't wait to get a house and set up an in-wall system. You have a heck of a lot more room to work than I do...lol.

For the auto top off I would really recommend going to the local plumbing store (Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, etc) and tell them what you are attempting to do. They are always able to help find a way to get the rig set up. I know silicone is strong but like you said Physics... if it ever fails you are guaranteed leakage down to that point. The plumbing area should have something like a small bulkhead that would help with that. Just my $.02.

I can't wait to see the final setup!

Some die off will occur, but not too much. So long as it wasn't out for hours.

It was in a styrofoam box on the way home for about 2.5 hours....

Then in the tank for a bit then out of the tank for a couple hours when I was working on the pieces I need.... how can I tell if it completely died? We can't exactly see bacteria. lol

Tank aquascaping is DONE... pictures later

Yep I got a plumbing piece... Will post pictures later of that when I finish it... just got the tank done for now... thanks, should be "finished" soon!

Smell :) You should be ok. I was referring to like over 5-6 hours at once. My understanding is that the bacteria can reproduce as quickly as 15 minutes. I don't remember where I got that number from though (maybe the microwave burrito box  )

Well I'm no expert at smelling ocean rock, but it didn't smell rotten. I would consider it a "fresh" ocean smell. The longest was a few hours anyway out of the tank, but I should be ok. I also got live sand which should help the cause.... after the sandstorm settles down in the tank now I can add my "shrimp" to start the cycle?

IMO you don't need the shrimp as you have some die off from your LR being out of water for a couple hours. But go for it, just don't leave it there forever. You get need to get a reading on the ammonia.

Would leaving the shrimp in the tank forever produce more bacteria to combat it, thus producing more beneficial bacteria in the long run? Some folks chime in here :D

the level of bacteria is in equilibrium with the bioload of the existing tank. If the bioload goes down so does the level of bacteria and then cycles back in response to an increase again
This is a continuous processs through out the life of your tank

Keeping the shrimp in would increase the ammonia and cause more cycling of bacteria--but they would die off in their numbers quickly as the the shrimp disentegrated.

In the meantime you have a high spike in ammonia which can kill of the inverts that are there and in the reef rock, developing slowly in the sand bed ect

Well I finished smoothing out the sand and had to tweak a couple other things.... I'll wait to things clear up before taking some pictures. I also took the background off for now until all is said and running,, makes it easier to see from behind the tank. I think I'm going to get some velcro and put that on the corners of the background... make it easier to take off and on.

Tomorrow I'll plop a shrimp in the tank. How long do I leave it in to get things underway? Just until I have an ammonia reading?

? never used shrimp. Sorry. But for the backing I use this stuff that all I do is spray a light mist of tap water on the glass and the backing sticks to it like vinyl. I imagine it comes off and goes on ok.
