A Capital Dream - 400g SPS build

Hey Ward, haven't checked in, in a bit. Tank is looking hairy but really nice growth and healthy looking corals.
Very nice!
Have you considered a sea hare? When they work, they work well.
I bought a sea hare about a month ago. Unfortunately, I have not seen him for a couple weeks. I think he is a goner. I may pick up another.

Yeah... I guess that's the problem with them.. I've been told that the best way to keep them healthy is to drip acclimate them. Apparently they are touchy about shipping and adapting to tank transfers..

One guestion: you said you're using 40 ml/day vinegar. What's your system volume again?
Oops.. just noticed it's right there.. d'oh! 400g

I have dropped the vinegar dosing and moved to the Aquaforest program. I am using the NP Pro and Pro Bio S. I am strting to see the results as the green hair algae is starting to decline. I have also ordered Vibrant which is an algae reduction product. It should be here next week. I am more concerned about bryopsis than the gha and Vibrant seems to attack it.

I just tested my P04 and it sits at .045 (Hanna phosphorus). My nitrates, as usual, are not detectable to my eyes. I run rowaphos for the P04. I am happy with levels because the corals are doing well. I do feed the fish quite well and believe that is part of the reason corals are doing ok.

Picked up a new addition for the tank this weekend:

This little emperor angel is ~2" long. He is currently in the qt tank. He is eating well but I expect him to be in there for a while. I have read that they don't go well in an LPS tank, but do well in an SPS tank. I will give him time to grow out before he goes in with the big boys.

Pretty little angel!
Interested to see how the vibrant works for you..
Please test nutrients before and during your additions..

I received my Vibrant today. My P04 is .015 (Hanna ULR =5) and my N03 is undetectable to my eye. I dosed 40ml Vivrant directly in the SPS tank and 7 ml in the 75g. These use a common sump but decided to go direct to the two DT's.

My alk is 7.2 dkh, so I am in the safe range with my low nutrients. I am dosing AF Build, Energy, Vitality and Aminos.

You have a beautiful system, wow. I hope vibrant works for you (and me both :p).

This piece is AMAZING, would you say it's A. abrotanoides? How long have you had it?

Ah Josh, now you are making me blush. [emoji6] Thank you for the compliment. It is almost time to move over to the SPS forum. That is where my heart is and I love the sticks. There is still build stuff, but the critical stuff is all done.

I honestly do not know the scientific name of this little gem. I wish I did. I refer to my garden plants with the latin terms, but am just starting to learn coral identification. I bought this piece from my local LFS and have had it about 8 months. It is a slow grower but has been picking up since I started using the AF Product line.

Sure looks a lot like abrotanoides to me. Very nice red.
It is a notoriously difficult coral.
Nice Job, Ward.

Thanks Matt. I only hope I can keep it growing well. It is one of my favourite pieces because of the colour. It is getting high light and high flow and has started to take off in the last few weeks.

Thanks. You had mentioned in your build you were looking at a couple emperors. I started to research them and most can manage them in a SPS tank, so figured I would pick him up. The lfs had him for a couple weeks and he ate when they fed him. I may ask the lfs to keep an eye for a blue face angel. These are one of my favourites. I don't plan on adding too many more fish to my 400g because space will reduce as the corals grow and I dont want them fighting for space.

Blue face angels are on my wish list as well but do some research on that pairing. Maybe get the more aggressive one smaller? I'm sure if you have enough caves to claim it should be fine in a large system!

I have a number of caves, only because I used a lot of shelf rock. One of the better purchases for me. The shelf rock allowed me to create a lot of hidden swim room for the fish. No setup is perfect, so I will probably have some problems. I want to get a blue face that is 3-4 inches. This gives him a chance before the emperor takes over as king.
